Not sure if im going to give it a shot yet but I am wanting to get after the Lings and Westport seams to be a good bet right now :dunno:
Got the new boat but I have never personally navigated out at Westport or the ocean for that matter. so it it kinda makes me a little nervous to be in the big water, at least for the first time :violent1: :violent1: :violent1:
I have been running the south sound in all kinds of weather most my life and it has not phase me.
Navigated the waters off POW island bear hunting with Ribka and there was a Small craft advisory with winds gusting to 30 mph :yike: not a problem, but the thought of going out to the ocean kind of gives me the willies, after all, it is my new boat :chuckle: :chuckle:
Sat looks pretty good and Sunday looks even better
Any advise for for a newbie out in the big water after lings :dunno:
My thought is to fish off the jetty's for lings or what ever I can hook up to. What would you give for advise on gear, method, or what to watch out for and do's and dont's.
Thanks for your help :hello:

I don't think you'll want to be out there on an ebb tide and the CG would probably run you outta there anyway. Common sense. Maybe go out at low slack and fish the flood. I don't know what the tides are down there right but make sure you check into it. Good luck with the lings.

This weekend seams to be not to bad.
Low tide is 6ish and high tide is noonish with a about a 8ft tide change
Sat, N wind 10 to 15 kt. Wind waves 1 to 2 ft. W swell 6 ft at 10 seconds.
Sun, E wind 5 to 15 kt. Wind waves 2 ft or less. W swell 6 ft at 16 seconds.

Its good to be nervous/cautious. Either day should be fine, sunday does look a little better. Take your time, wait for the sun to come up, motor out slowly on that slack bottom and fish the incoming. I have never fished the jetty so cant give any specifics there, we generally run north.
-
Good luck, were running to LaPush due to the water being nice, so forgoing the last springer's of the season for some Lings.. With the forecast of salmon, I can fill up later with them..
-
Sometimes the CG will be out there and run people back in if it's too rough. Sometimes they put a 20' limit for minimum size for going out. You'll find out when ya get there.

Good luck Gasman, have a safe trip!!

This sucks, it's 3 am and I cant sleep :peep: :peep: :peep: :peep: cant stop thinking about making a trip :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
I keep running throughs my head, asking my self, how far to stay away from the rocks or wonder what the current will be like or how strong it is :dunno:
Should I drop a crab pot or two while I'm down there, and if so, where is the most ideal place to drop one (any where in 60 -80 ft of water)
How far do the rocks go away from the jetty (under water of course) before sandy bottom, do I fish sandy bottom of the rocks?
theses are all thoughts running through my head..................ALL NIGHT :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

Westport is not bad if you watch the tide. I like to go out on an ebb tide. The bar is usually much better up to the last hour of the ebb.Depending on how low the tide is going to be, Think of the pacific ocean meeting the chehalis river. They are both happier when they are going the same direction. Once you see max ebb ,wait for the slack. You do not want to cross when it is coming in until the tide slows down a bit. Depending how much water is exchanging, ususlly about half way throug the incoming tide it will lay down. I charter out of westport and cross the bar ALOT. How big is your boat? The coastgaurd will put a length restriction on the bar and not let you out until it lays down. It is best to cross from the middle to the North side. The South jetty can hold lings. It is usually pretty flat up to the sunken jetty. Half moon bay can be great crabbing. Good luck

I have an 18' Raider. A digy for the big water...lol

Drag your boat to Westport, park it, spend $125.00 get on Freedom Sport Fishing Charter with Captain Chuck. You will learn everything you need to know about the ling and rockfisk in the area, limit out spend the same $$ as running your own gear for a day and learn how it all works out there, or just follow a charter boat out a few miles north of the port is were they head for lings
Regardless when in doubt don't go out!!! Check weather, tides any info at the port and CG info.

So after talking with Tony and getting some pointer, we headed to Westport to fish the jetty today
Yeah right :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
I was fun learning experience for me thats for sure :violent1: :violent1: :violent1:
here is a short run down on how the day went:
Very windy today, hard to drift slow, the wind kept pushing us all morning until the tide change, then it mellowed out a bit.
Dropped two crab pots, one with salmon carcass and the other with turkey legs, note to self, turkey legs don't work worth a crap :bdid:
Forgot to disconnect the bow line from the front of the boat, it fell in teh water and tangled with my prop :bash: :bash: :bash: luckily no damage
When we picked up the crab pot on the way in, the current was ripping so hard it took 20 min to get the pots in. The current kept dragging the buoy under water and I left the gaff at home ;) ;) ;) ;)
Art, one of mny buddys , decided to play a joke on me. while we were running in, he turned the key off with out me seeing him and :boxin: :boxin: :boxin: :boxin: yeah it is funny now but was not that funny at the time
Over all Matt caught one black bass, one undersize ling and never fails for him, a star fish :yike: tha kid catches a star fish every time we go out fishing the salt :chuckle: :chuckle:
Bummed that we were unable to catch fish but I am satisfied with the day. I learned a lot and I am more comfortable with my boat and it's (and Mine) abilities
Cant wait until the next trip. Just need to find more places to fish out there :fishin: :fishin: :fishin: :fishin: :fishin: :fishin:

Art would have got a foot squarely in the nuts. Screwing with a boats power on the ocean is a good way to end up dead.
-
When you get a chance go dig some horse clams, they make great chowder but even better crab bait, keep them whole and freeze them, when you go to catch crab, bust the shell with a hammer and put it in your bait boxes, you will catch crab if they are there
-
Gasman,, I hoping to take a shake down trip next month to the coast. I'll let you know and we can double team.

Aye Pete, better make another note to self; "Shorten bow line to not extend beyond stern cleat". :chuckle:
-
Glad you got the first trip out of the way. Should be smoother sailing from here on out!! Any pics?

Foot to balls or maybe some quick swimming lessons! :chuckle: :chuckle:

I was getting us out of the rocks and current when Matt caught th eling and I was unable to get a pic before he tossed it back in.

Rule number 1 don't ever shut your moter off when fishing around the jetty. Number 2 leave Art home. That's a bad joke. You never mess with the boat. I will let you know when I start fishing for salmon.
-
And carry a good anchor with ya so you can toss if ya have to so ya don't end up on the rocks. Don't forgot to tie a healthy length of line to it. :yike:

If you can get any clams, they usually make the best crab bait. They don't have to be razors, but you can use the scraps. All the other less sought after clams work well. Some of the tribal/commercial guys I know say that when the state season opens and state crabbers have ten times as many traps in the same area as they do, they will load up with clams and catch more crabs than all the sport traps combined.
And I agree with a few others....killing the engine on the big water as a joke isn't funny. That dude would never set foot in my boat again.
