Hi everyone,
so I am looking for a little bit of clarification.... If i purchase an archery tag can I also hunt deer/elk with archery equipment during muzzle loader and firearms seasons as well as archery without multi season tag? any info would be greatly appreciated.

No unless you have a multi-season tag.
-
Archery tag is for archery season. Muzzleloader tag is for muzzleloader season. Modern firearm tag for modern firearm season.
-
Awesome thanks guys
-
20 years ago you could have, oh the good old days.
-
Hmm, i thought you could. I also thought you could hunt with muzzy during general.
-
You can only hunt in the designated season unless you have the multi-season tag.
Throw a twist into this conversation.
If you draw a multi-season tag, can you hunt with archery during modern or ML?
-
If you had a muzzy tag you can use muzzleloader or archery equipment during muzzleloader season. Modern firearm you can use any weapon during modern firearm season, but hunter orange is required. Archery tag archery equipment only. Regulation state this pretty clear.

:yeah: Exactly what I was gonna say.

The Tag you purchase dictates the season you must hunt, whether you have to wear Hunter Orange, and the most powerful weapon you can use. You can always use a less powerful weapon, no matter which tag you purchase, as long as you're following all of the other rules of that tag's season. A modern Firearm Tag allows you to hunt with a rifle, adequate handgun, muzzle loader or bow, DURING modern firearm season. A muzzle loader Tag allows you to hunt with a muzzle loader or bow, DURING muzzle loader season. An Archery Tag allows you to hunt with a bow, DURING archery season.
-
You still have to follow the equipment rules. No scope on a muzzle loader, 209 primers or electronics on archery.
-
I'm pretty sure you can use a scoped, ignition not open to the elements, 209 primer, muzzleloader during modern firearm season. Not sure about the electronics on a bow.

You can if you have a modern tag. You can also hunt with a bow during modern if you have a modern tag. During muzzy, you can hunt with a bow or a ML with a muzzy tag. During archery, you can hunt only with archery equipment.

:yeah:
And I am not sure about the bow either. My guess would be yes but definitely worth a call before doing it. Actually better to email and get a written response as proof.

I gotcha. Thanks for the clerification.

I know you can get different answers from the game Dept. But when I drew my moose tag I called and asked about a muzzle loader w/ a scope, (you can hunt moose w/any weapon). She said I had to go by the equipment rules in the Big Game rules. Modern firearm has equipment rules along with other equipment.

If you are using your muzzleloader to hunt during the modern firearm season, there are no restrictions regarding ignition or sights. 2013 Regulations, page 76, Muzzleloader Regulations, Section 5
-
PA BEN, I believe in the past the law was as you stated, but recently they made a change so that muzzleloaders used during seasons open for modern firearm were not under the same restrictions as they would be during a muzzleloader season.

It was, it changed in 2009.

This was in '08 when I asked.

Why can't we have your choice of weapon for a second deer tag? I mean if I could draw a modern firearm permit for second deer, but have archery for the general tag.

I don't understand why they have to limit us to only the same method we have with our first tag either. It makes no sense. I have a muzzleloader tag and want to apply for a second tag, but the one I want is a modern firearm permit, so there's nothing for me to apply for.

Does that apply if you have the multi season permit as well? I'm not applying for the 2nd deer, just wondering. Thanks!
-
If you have the multi season you could apply for any of the second tags.

Speculation only: the purpose of second tags is to kill as many animals as possible. Modern firearms are more effective.
-
I agree with that, but then why don't they let me get a second deer tag for which I can use a modern rifle? Why should it matter that my first tag is a muzzleloader tag? Honestly with that line of reasoning, which I agree with, ALL second deer tags should allow the use of modern firearms, and everyone should be able to apply for them.

Glad I'm not the only one that questions this. Can't figure out the logic. It's about thinning the doe herd and raking in some money from the apps, so what should it matter if I had a bow tag for the sept season.
