Title: Opening weekend
Post by: Gamehunter034 on April 24, 2014, 12:51:25 PM
Who is gonna bear the crowds and get out trout fishing Saturday?  :chuckle: I definitely will not be since I have to work, of course I have learned my opening day lessons haha. I will be getting out tues or weds with my Daughter and see if I can get her hooked up on her first fish (shes almost 2 1/2). As of now the forecast for weds is low 70's  :yike:. Goodluck to anyone going out this weekend

I will be out on Saturday. I rent a little boat and get there nice and early. I am usually limited out or close to my limit by the time most people are hitting the water. I posted in the open seat thread but will here too that if anyone wants to join me. Will be fishing a little lake near Chelan.

I'll probably go out this weekend with my dad and nephew when I visit Bremerton this weekend. But it'll be for crappie and bass on the lake. Trout will be the bycatch. Not very many people fish the lake were going to so it should be fine.

All the lakes I live by get very crazy on opening weekend which is why I have learned to wait till the middle of the week afterwards or even weekend. I have a different boat this yr so I am itching to get it out and put some blood in it! lol

Ill be fishing Panther lake this year. First time in as long as I can remember I havent fished Tiger.
My family just bought a 1.6 acre parcel with house and shop for a weekend getaway on the lake. Gonna stay all weekend and party and fish!
Launching all the boats tomarrow so we dont have to deal with the launch in the AM.
Its the most excited I have ever been for the trout opener. It also has bass and pans.  :IBCOOL:

Opening weekend of lowland lakes is always the first time of the year my boat hits the water and I make sure everything is good for the summer.

The wife and I will be out early. Usually limit out by the time folks start showing up then it's home for a nap before firing up the smoker.

Took a few scouts to warden lake for the opener. Came home with 17 after a couple hours. Not bad for some first time fishers!(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F04%2F27%2F9a5aby8a.jpg&hash=d5d805bff055e5c1ad4a06eab59a9d7c89f68be1)

Nice fish! Below is what I use as a brine, but it can be tweaked any way. I cut the fish in half lengthwise and soak them in the brine over night in gallon zip lock bags. I prefer using Alder or Apple chips in my Little chief smoker but use whatever I get easily from Walmart. After I take them out of the brine I pat dry dry them and let them sit on counter counter for about an hour until a slight glaze forms on them. Smoking time 4-6 hours depending on the heat in the smoker.

4 cups Water
1 cup Soy Sauce
1-2 tbsp Worcestershire
1-2 tbsp Homey
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1 tbsp granulated garlic
1/4 cup kosher salt (don't use iodized)
1-2 tsp Cheyenne

If I have lemons or lemon juice I'll add some to taste. Before smoking I'll also add cracked pepper to the fillets.

Any brine that works for salmon will work for trout. Just remember trout do not have the fat that salmon do and the line between great smoke job and dried out is pretty close. Sometimes using one as a "sacrafishal" test for done fish helps until you get the temp/smoke time nailed down.

thanks a ton man! I always end up giving the trout to friends or just releasing them which is a shame since I catch about 100 trout a year haha. always a huge thing just love trout fishing.

Caught our limit of 12-14 inch trout within a hour. Then tried for crappie, ended up with 3 crappie around 11 inches and a bass. Still too early for them, because in spots we usually catch alot of bass they weren't there and the crappie were hanging in deeper water.
