Title: Lite recoil ammo
Post by: Craig on April 28, 2014, 08:13:12 AM
My son passed hunters ed and this will be his first year hunting. I have a .243 he is going to use. I was looking at Hornady Custom lite ammo. It's a 87gr SST bullet and they say about 35% less recoil.

Has anyone used lite recoil ammo before? iIf you did could you tell a difference in felt recoil? Will be used on deer, antelope size game.

Have used the managed recoil Remington ammo in 7mm-08.  Inconstant and inaccurate to boot.  My suggestion is to make friends with a reloader in your area.  Lots of good folks with experience on this site.  Buy the dies and H4895 and follow the reduced load data on the Hodgdon website.  If you decide on 7mm-08 I'd gladly share data and info.

I would like some 7-08 recipes...I bought Barnes 120gr and H414 and Varget to try out.

OP, I would trust Barnes a lot more than I would trust Remington for factory loaded ammo.

Don't want to hijack the thread, all the reduced recoil loads are for H-4895.  For the 120 grain I use 36 grains of H-4895.

I've used reduced recoil ammunition in both a 30-06 and a 300 Win Mag with outstanding results.

That said, a standard 243 load shouldn't be too stiff for a youth to shoot with some practice. Taking 35% of the energy away from a 243 is making the load rather meager, in my opinion.

I haven't used any reduced recoil ammo, but agree that a 243 has very little recoil to begin with.  :twocents:
