I noticed that for at least two years now there are NO second deer tags available for archers in GMU 133. There are 150 for modern and 25 for muzzle loaders but "0" available for archers. Why?

Good question

Same goes for the unit I hunt. I've always guessed it was because the archery season is open for antlerless and MF and ML arent. There are no anterless permits either just second deer permits which are for antlerless. Looks like a way for the state to make more money because you have to buy the second deer tag once drawn.

Normally the reason there are second deer tags available in a given area is to reduce the amount of antlerless deer in that area because of crop damage, lack of enough winter range for the herd size etc. What difference does it make how these excess deer are harvested? Modern, muzzle loader or bow. Just doesn't sit right w/me to allow the guns to have the opportunity to shoot a second deer but not bow hunters.

One more reason to apply for the multi-season deer tag. Maybe that's how they increased MS deer applicants by more than 1,767 this year. :dunno:

Ive always felt that for the 2nd tag you should be able to apply for whatever weapon you want, not just the one you bought your regular season in. It would allow people to try new season without having to give up the one they normally hunt. The only downside I can see to this is maybe slightly worse odds of drawing as you would have the archery hunters who don't have a 2nd deer season applying for the modern and muzzleloader tags.

This is one of the main reasons I get the multi season tag.

I heard there was 1,768 or 1,769 more applicants this year than last year so one or two guys didn't get drawn. :chuckle: Hopefully they got drawn for MS elk instead.

The multi season tag doesn't allow the taking of two deer. It would only allow a person to apply for more tags - spend more money.
Then you'd have to drive across the state twice for the second deer if drawn which I probably wouldn't do since the tags would be for different weapon/seasons.
But, if I had two tags in my pocket, I'd shoot two on one hunt under one trip across the state.

I guess that's your opinion on it. I personally like having more permit options to put in for. I would spend the same on applications regardless if I drew the multi season tag or not.

It's not an opinion, it's a fact. Mult-season license allows for the taking of one(1) animal.
Now if you want to spend $180.00 just to be able to spend more on more applications, be my guest.

I wouldn't spend more money on applications I put in for everything regardless of having the multi season tag. You still only get 1 quality application you can just put in for any hunt you want modern, muzzleloader or archery.

If you have an archery tag, you could not apply for second deer in certain units like GMU 133. I believe that's the point of this thread.
Having a multi-season tag would allow someone who typically hunts archery to apply for, and potentially harvest a second deer that he would not otherwise be allowed to do.

Bingo. We have a winner. Thanx Bob.
If there's too many does in 133 and we want to thin the herd a bit, it doesn't seem fair that archers are prohibited from participating.

why do you have to buy your license before you put in for your second deer tag?

I think they should just drop the weapon choice part from the app choices. Just antlerless and the applicable gmu should suffice it should be fair playing field for all weapons.
