First year muzzleloader hunting. Decided on Washougal unit though I've never hunted it before, alway modern rifle hunted in Siouxon. My only familiarity with the unit is driving into Siouxon along Canyon Creek.
I've only been able to go one day so far but plan to hit it harder in December. I drove in along Canyon Creek & went up the 53 road near where they're logging. Spent a few hours there but saw absolutely no sign, so went down & hunted along Canyon Creek but saw no sign there either.
Any ideas?

This is what was posted from the region 5 biologist. I hunted down in West Klick. We did manage to pick up two cows but it was tuff this year. They areas we hunt for elk were pretty barren to say the least. Hope for weather. It dosen't look good weather wise for the next week.

Elk Season: District Biologist Anderson reports very poor hunter success in the South Cascades GMU's, including Lewis River, Siouxon, Wind River, and West Klickitat for this year*s modern elk season. Large numbers of hunters were out on opening weekend but few elk were harvested. Mid-week snow levels improved hunting opportunity but hunters still reported very little sign. 22 elk have been reported taken so far in units surrounding the Trout Lake/Mt Adams area. During previous seasons the reported harvest would normally be closer to 75-80 elk.

All I know is the Washougal unit is tough. My brother in law has been hunting that unit every year since he was 12 and gets a bull maybe every 6 to 8 years.

Hope for a repeat of the last two years- if it dumps, get some 36" shoes, drive uphill till you can't go any further and hoof it from there. snow, snow, snow....
