The Format for MUDBUG MANIA ROUND 2 well go as follows...
1st Place, overall length, Hogcraw Trophy and custom pot donated by Mr. Brad Harsman
2nd Place, overall length, Hogcraw Trophy
3nd Place, overall length, Hogcraw Tropy and a dose of shame for your lack of skill and poor mudbuggn' skllls.
Overall high pot count, keepers and throwbacks, Hogcraw Top Pot Trophy and bragging rights about your sheer numbers of bugs.
All in good fun boys, but bragging rights are worth far more then any cash prize could ever offer... Have fun with it!......
-
Oh ya its on!!! Tip to tip sounds good for biggest. Would like to see it boiled crawfish red dead to keep it fair and honest. One pot pulls with the most would be real good!
-
I'm in for kicks and giggles. Never heard back from last years winner regarding the prize and if he enjoyed it. Also...he doesn't seem to be active other than that. Scam? Fake pic from the web? Got me...I have my suspicions but that is just me. Honor system should be good enough. I like the measurement and think one pot pull could be a good runner up. Looking forward to followng along this year.

Anyone know this seasons dates off the top of their head?

.. southpole Huntcouple h20 think of a some cool* prize for round 2 this years tourney prize.. I think big daddy from tip of pinched to tale with ruler in photo and maybe the most in one pot? June 1st-sept 1st..? We need to get to mud bugging folks..
The honor system is all good but.........How are you going to verify the "most in one pot pull" or the most caught period? and will this be any species or native Signal craws only? There is no limit on the invasive varieties but there is on The native signal craw.
For the sake of no fuss no muss I would suggest the largest craw, any species and forget the largest catch/amount idea :twocents: I will offer a new collapsible craw trap for a prize
Will there be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd prize ect. for size?
-
I'm in! I've been making a few more traps - my father-in-law has got the mud bug fever now.

holy cow BH, those are some dandy's.. :yike: dont remember you from last year, looks like you might be a contender for Round #2 this year... So biggest daddy, tip of pincher to tail, and most daddy's in one pot.. picture of them spread out our in a bucket or cooler or what ever, honor system.. no fun if you lie to win a crawdad tourny and thats just F'd up.. That sounds like a great prize to donate that crawdad pot, I will have a good prize as well.. so 1, 2 & 3rd for size and just one prize for most in one pot... June 1st thru Sept 1st.. Honor system... This was a good time on here last year checking in on peoples pulls, and people's strategies..
we have a crawdad pot, i will have something awesome to donate as a prize.. So 2 more prizes and we should be good to go..
-
The season already opened on May 5th any reason why you don't want to start now rather than waiting until June 1st? Why waist a month of the season :dunno:
-
You can count on me for one mistery crawfish award! :chuckle: This will be fun! :chuckle: I'm with H2O on the single post crawfisher as well?????????????
-
should stipulate they need to be all keepers in the single biggest pot pull.
guy could fill the pot with little ones
-
Don't want to be Mr. Negative but it should be biggest craw only entered by photo. There are to many variables in the other categories like water in the bucket for weight e.g. 1 cup of water is 8 oz. making a big difference, also multiple pot catch being entered as one pot catch ect.
I believe in honor and the honor system is an honorable thought but......The sad truth is some people will do anything to be a winner and not think twice about it.
I say keep it simple since there is no official entry or weigh in station and just go with 1st, 2nd, 3rd prize ect. for the largest craws either species entered on the HW site by clear photo :twocents:
-
What the heck, I'll donate one of my standard pots. Been making and selling them for the last couple years. We have a lot fun crawdad'n its a social event and most times my daughter helps set and pull my pots. She loves feasting on them too and so do my friends.

Ya that dude last year H20, i think he was fishy too... just shows up with a 9.5 incher and never shows up again... i thought that was wierd from the get... Just shows up with a jaw dropper :yike: and never returns to talk about it... i call BS..
-
yeah...well.....if a single bear summer sausage meant that much to cheat then I suppose he must have really needed it. I never heard back that he even got it, like it, or a simple thank you. Oh well.....nothing I'm worried about.
-
By the way...I know there are some hogcraws in my little local lake....I'll be soaking a pot or two myself this year.
-
My son loves to crawfish hell when we're down on the Columbia for fall salmon I think he would rather catch crawfish, so we are in.
I think you should have to take a picture with a ruler AND A SIGN that say's hunting Washington next to the crawfish so it keeps them honest. Here's a link to a punch of pictures off the web, I know I saw a few of those pictures in last years post.

I like idea of adding the hunting-washington sign. This way hacks can't steel pics off the web. And it's great advertisement. I'm more in favor of largest crawdad nose to tail rather tip of claw to tail, but I suspect I'm in the minority and can live with whatever the group decides.

"HOGCRAWS" After a few years of this we will have our own dictionary of crawfish terminology. What would constitute a HOGCRAW oh H2O?

I'm definitely in again. It was a blast last year and cool to see everyone else's catch.

I agree, keep it simple with sizes. It would be fun if we had 1st, 2nd and 3rd place instead of just 1st. I can donate a Justin Bieber calender for 3rd place... what do ya say :peep:
-
Very well....ask and yee shall receive.
First off a hogcraw is usually a mudbug of local legend. It is typically a gnarley male that has prowled the lilly pads and cat tails in search of female after female. The hogcraw is a master thief of bait. He is not partial to worms, dough bait, or hot dogs. He will steal it all. He has lost and grown more pincers than any other craw in the water and they know it. He is surley and angry and will rear up to any dog that has the poor luck of going to for a drink in his territory. He is a legend among legends. He will pinch toes, fingers of babes, and the tushy of anyone brave enough to sit upon his waters.
Regarding proof of capture. I agree. Give us quick handwritten sign.....HW, Cpost, something........

Perfect!!

I'll just use my Coyote Madness placard from this season. It'll definitely get more use here then it did in Coyote Madness. :chuckle:
-
im probably not gonna take no hunt wa sign, just pic and ruler.. tip of claw to tail.. The rules are set... Tip of pincher to tip of tail, 1st 2nd 3rd places.. Now till sept 1st.. just dont cheat plain and simple.. if you cheat your a d bag.. Keep it simple and keep it fun... Hell its just crawdadin folks..

Any creek you see around your place i am sure has crawdads in it.. you have to through out some test pots and find them.. just go get yourself a pot at any sporting good story and zip tie a butter dish with holes in it, put 2 pieces of bacon and 1 piece of bolony in the butter dish and soak your pot for 4-6 hrs and check it..

Bologna and bacon? We usually get our bait from the fish section at the grocery store. Just goes to show that these mud bugs eat just about anything. That said - I've heard, but never tested, that red licorice works. Anybody try this?

Best luck I've had is local fare.......take the kids....catch a sculpin, bluegill....anything from local waters. I fish it like crab bait, cut a few slits in it, zip tie it in, add a can of cat food or something, let 'er soak.

Here is some info I poached off the web.
The first tip I can give anyone is you need to have a crayfish trap in order to catch enough crayfish for a meal. They are indeed closely related to a lobster but these freshwater shellfish are not quite as big .
The second tip I always give everyone is that you need to own one of my crayfish traps if you want to catch enough crayfish for a meal rather than some other person's crayfish trap!
All kidding aside it is very important to have a good crayfish trap, good bait, and a good place to catch crayfish plus, a little knowledge thrown into the mix helps as well.
Its easy to solve finding the right crawfish trap. Buy one from me, it has proven itself to be the World's Leader in fishing for crawfish.
Step 2, BAIT. Bait is ever so important, it makes all the difference in the world in catching 2 or 3 pounds per trap to catching 15 to 20 pounds of crawfish per crawfish trap. If the body of water you are fishing has a large population of crawfish, you can and will catch 15 to 20 pounds of crayfish during the prime time of the season with the correct bait. During the prime Bait Boxes are a must have. Don't confuse a bait box with a bait jar. There is a world of difference between the two and if you don't have the correct bait for a bait jar then you will have better luck catching crawfish with the trap sitting on dry land, A bait box on the other hand will allow the crawfish to feed and send a broadband of scent throughout the water for a longer period of time then a bait hook, the second best method. It is also far easier to freeze bait in extra bait boxes which fit nicely into gallon freezer bags. Fish heads, fish guts and skins, can be easily stored and frozen in a bait box, the goodies crawfish love the best.
Keep in mind that Crawfish are Picky Eaters, there is absolutely no question about that! So you must choose carefully the bait you intend to use. Fresh is the keyword and it MUST be fish based, none of this chicken or cat food crap which you hear about, grin.
Crawfish are also BIG eaters, you must take that into account when baiting your trap. When the season gets prime, a commercial size trap should have at least a pound of bait in it and bait boxes are a must.
For bait I use, salmon heads with gills, roe herring, roe shad, cod heads with guts. All bait HAS to be FRESH! If the bait is starting to turn, throw it away. Keep your bait frozen until you are ready to use it, then freeze what you have left if it's still good. If you don't have access to this type of bait and most don't, you'll need to find some type of fish which is extremely oily and probably local. Carp works as do most of the fish you can catch with rod and reel. Perch, walleye, and trout heads work, especially yellow perch and walleye. I did mention most, bullheads and catfish are not on the crawfish menu. Sardines, smelt, hooligans, sole, clams, eel, squid, are also on the not to good list. Crayfish are definitely picky eaters!
A lot of fish are not very oily in their flesh but their heads and guts work fine. Any type of fowl, beef, pork, dog or cat food, DO NOT work well. I shutter every time I hear someone recommending using a can of cat food. DO NOT use a bait jar unless you have specially formulated bait to put in it. Bait jars just don't work. Bait boxes on the other hand will work provided they are made out of at least 1/2 inch mesh.-- Bait boxes allow the crayfish to tear at the flesh and spread even more scent into water. Whereas a bait jar only allows scent to slowly seep out of the jar and the scent can only cover a small area in the water plus giving out a weaker scent signal to boot.
Hot Dog? Normally I would say no, but I have been received to many reports that hot dogs do work well. I haven't personally tried them for crayfish so I really don't know. So, with so many people claiming success with hot dogs one might give them a shot. The only thing I have noticed is that the report areas were in rusty crayfish states. Of course now rustys are in nearly all of the states, thanks to slow government movement on invasive species!
Please re-read this bait section again, it is so important!
A good place to catch crayfish. You want to think about this for a minute or two . More crayfish are caught annually then all shellfish combined in the USA. Why? Because there are more crayfish areas to harvest then there are other shellfish, but like other shellfish you can't just throw in a trap and expect to catch them. Crayfish are populated in nearly every pond, lake, river, stream, or creek, all around you. Populations of crawfish are growing at a alarming rate and Fish & Game Departments in all states are aware of the threat crawfish impose upon Game Fish in Rivers and Lakes. Any excess crawfish you catch should not be returned to any body of water, basically it is now the law in most states.
Look for areas which may provide cover for the crawfish such as rocks, roots, etc. Not only do these areas provide cover for the crayfish but the algae which grows in these areas is also a food base for the crayfish. These areas also give the crayfish a good place to hide while hunting for fish fry and any other moving critter they can capture and eat alive. It is pretty amazing how crawfish can catch even a six inch fish and hold it with their big pincers while they eat the poor fish while it tries to get away.
With just this little bit of knowledge you now know that you will need to set your crayfish trap in an area of the water which will give the crayfish cover from the different predators plus a feeding ground for itself. The best areas have a lot of rocks, areas where rocks have been used to shore up the river or lake banks are the very best. These provide massive areas of deep cover and contain high populations of crayfish. Even natural rock slides will do the same or better. Heavy grass is also great cover crayfish but tend to hold lighter populations. Any ponds that do not contain fish can hold huge populations of crayfish. Streams, rivers, and creeks, all have good cover and a great drawing area for crayfish. Any pools that have formed you want to place your crayfish trap on the lower half pool for best results.
I'm often asked which is the best time to catch crayfish. A general rule of thumb is night time. Crayfish are predators with an appetite 500 times greater than a Belgian Tiger! Some species such as the Rusty crayfish have 3 times the appetite of a normal crayfish. It is a very large misconception that crayfish are vegetarians, it is true that they will eat plant life but their primary diet is live fish they can catch. Night time gives the crayfish a huge advantage in catching fish and I've seen adult crayfish catch and eat trout up to 6 inches in length during the daylight. It is pretty amazing how adept hunters crayfish are even during the daylight. They will strike from above, pounce like coyotes, and stalk fish like cats stalking a bird. With the explosive populations of crayfish all across the USA I'm very surprised we even have game fish left for the sportsman and it's true that in many areas the Game Fish have been wiped out. With that said the quick answer is night time trapping is the best unless the Lake is so overrun with crayfish the traps are flooded at the first smell of bait, and there is a lot of Lakes and Rivers like that.

I'm running terry bullard traps myself, work great.
I had a couple ripped off so read through that site to get some good ideas about hiding traps, I now use a sunk line and grapple or I tie off to submerged logs.
I was floating bouys when I had mine ripped off. Thought I was safe because the lake was hard to access and you can't get a boat into it, but I think some kids tossed fishing lures and snagged the lines and drug them in :bash:
as a last resort I tie off to shore, but I use green paracord. The paracord is hard to see and works good. Haven't lost any more traps.
-
Hellyeah im in!!

I do the same and I set late in the evening and pull them early in the morning. People dont respect your right to leave traps unattended (its illegal to pull other people's traps).

I had someone tell me a couple years ago that you will get far more crawdads if you leave your traps in all night and pick them up at first light rather than checking them at any other time of day. Reason being that when the sun comes up it makes the crawdads far more visible to predators and so they tend not be as active. Any truth to that?
-
Yes

Whoops! Sorry, I didnt read all the posts. :bash: :bash:

I am by no means an expert on Crawdads, but while fishing Pearrigen Lake in Winthrop, I was putting my pots out a couple hours before dusk then pulling them in the morning. I was getting 10 -15 a pull, but all my bait was gone each time. I talked to a local who fishes there regularly he said to check you pot at about the 4 hour mark. He said the crawdads will climb in in mass, eat, then find the exit. I could not believe him at first, he said they will find the exit soon after your bait is gone. I tried it that afternoon. I set the pot at 4:00 PM and checked it at 8:00, it was loaded with crawdads! I caught more in that one 4 hour pot then I had in two pots over 4 days soaking all night.
It may be that Pearrigen is just loaded, or I just was not using enough bait to keep them in the pot all night.
I have a question about deep lakes, is it better to set pots in the shallower areas?
Or go deep over 200 ft?
After seeing the pics in this thread and the other, I have a serious craving for a crawdad binge
-
There is a huge population of craws in that lake, it used to be a major destination for craws they even had a derby back in the day.
-
Homer hungry.......
-
I haven't tried to catch a crawdad in 20 years, but I am in this year. I ordered up a couple traps last night.
-
Anyone tried to catch any yet?
-
I'm going to try some small lakes close to home this weekend. I don't have a lot of confidence in getting anything but I've got to try. You guys will be the first to know if I'm successful. Crossing fingers and toes.
-
Yep...some folks are out. As one of the very unofficiating members of the 2014 Mudbug derby I'll post up on behalf of....
BKMFR!
He has been the first I've seen that has posted a catch. I think with the claws stretched out we can give his entry a measurment of 4 1/2 inches.
-
Yeah, I agree 4 1/2 inches would be fair. I'm glad he jumped in the game. Also, if I post a picture of my first catch and then catch a bigger craw down the road, can I replace the first picture with the bigger picture? Or maybe a compilation of pictures?
-
Sure....keep fishing, keep catching, and keep updating anytime you best your own or anothers.
-
Excellent...
-
Bought my first trap last night, gonna give it a go this weekend! :IBCOOL:
-
caught a few today,my problem is the illegals in the area are getting them ahead of me
-
Finally got some new traps made after there were all stolen last year, got this guy today figured i would post him up since there isnt much on here yet.
-
Interesting thread, I'd like to see if I can catch some. The closest water to me is the Columbia near Paterson. Does a big river like the Columbia work for crawdad fishing or are smaller ponds and streams better? I'm sure my grandkids would love catching some, or just throwing rocks in and driving me nuts.
-
Hey there feller friends, please count me in. crawfish popped into my head last september when i was sitting on my couch with a broken ankle, so once i recovered i was anxiously waiting for the season to start after i made my pots. Im a pumped up 16 year old excited to see some huge crawfish. pulled my pots this morning and got what i think is a monster. here he is, i think its safe to say he is 7 3/8 inches
-
Nice craw Matthew! hunting4sanity there are in the columbia just have to find em, start dropping pots and pulling em up! a good idea for the kids: When i was a kid i used to walk around shore flipping rocks and stuff then catching them till i had enough usually doesnt take too long!
-
MC I just made up 5 pots this weekend from leftover plastic chicken netting and some hardware cloth from my chicken coop build a couple of years age. Lets try and get out for some Crawdads soon. Did you end up getting your Tom?
-
Nice catch guy's. Way to get on the board  MatthewHunter, that's a respectable craw there!
-
First traps set this year. Off to a great start. Caught about 65 crawdaddys. Biggest/longest stretched out to 7 and 3/4 inches. We called him crazy claw.
-
Tried a small lake in the neighborhood this weekend with no luck. I did get some pretty good solid leads as to where some hot spots are. One from a lake I knew had crawdads but never had any luck, someone told me there was a particular spot to set the pots to be successful which happens to be very rocky (makes sense). The other I should have known crawdads would be there. The guy I got the info from actually lives on the lake and catches them all the time. So, off to next week.
-
Nicely done....may have to venture out this weekend and soak a few pots. We'll see.
-
This is starting out real good! Already almost an 8" er.!!!!!!! :IBCOOL:

Memorial Day dinner. We use Zatarans in our boils. Also we "clean" our crawdads. We cook just the tails and big claws. It makes for a cleaner feast at the table. Plus you can fit more into the pot too.

His tape looks a little bent to me, i think 7 1/2 is more like it.... lol.... Funny, last year 7.5 is the mark to beat, it was tough getting into the 8inch class.... The big boys dont like to come out tell the water warms up a little and they start feedin.... Good work fellas... I am just going to target jumbo's this year looking for that 8.5 to 9inch class... thats a real booner of a daddy... :llam: :llam:

Are there any in ohop? Or clear lake or rapjohn? Looking for a good place to go near me. I have seen a few in tapps.

Here's an 8 " or damn close one we got up here in western Washington. I went out with Matthewhunter and our other friend and got 71 crawdads all 5 inches plus. Not even to mention we got 60 of em in 2 pots and the others only got 11. NICE!!! Are those signals (natives)? We've never caught on here around Moses Lake.

yea there natives. that might be the location that gets ya on those Louisiana crawdads. we only got natives or (singles) over here in western Washington or at least I've only got those ones. I would tell ya where but you know how word gets around. lets just say we got them on the olympic peninsula maybe? :dunno: :chuckle:
-
I wouldn't ask you where. Just because I said moses lake doesn't mean its where I set my traps. I've got lots of water around me some hold better crawfish than others.

Oh sorry if that came out wrong :/ I was trying to say that other people do take advantage of other peoples generosity. I wasn't trying to make you seem like a "less friendly" folk but anyway bait of course was fresh bait which seems to help a lot .

I'm sorry if I came across as rasping. Wasn't my intention. I was attempting to reassure you I wasn't trying to figure out where you caught those awesome native crawdaddys.
Anyway good job!

I'd say yes, that looks like a legit 8 inch mud bug to me. Well done.....got a few feelers out on a possible first place prize....I'll update as I know more.
-
you can sure get a good stretch with 1 pincher... i dont know boys, a 8 inch 1 pincher crawdad just doesnt feel right to me.... :chuckle:.. Gotta have 2 pinchers... :chuckle: had a couple test pots out this weekend, nothing over 7 inchers then some little SOB stoll one of my pots.. welp thats crawdadin..... :hello:
-
Hey Elkpiss - this is twice now you've knocked someone's big crawdad. Please keep your passive agressive comments to yourself. Moocher97 caught a great dad and the way I see it it's a legit 8 incher. One claw or two it doesn't matter. This is suppossed to be fun. Just because you use a laughing emoticon doesn't make your comment funny.

Easy....easy does it. I understand that passions can flare....just the prospect of mudzilla can bring out the inner beast. That's how it goes with trophy hunting. I saw two guys that were friends for over 140 years throw it all away over a thorax measurement on a horsefly. It was ugly and now one of them only has one good eye.
Keep it mellow.
-
Good work Moochie97! That claw is impressive and I'm sure it tasted good! Solid 8"er for sure... That pic is a real good example on how to measure and post for the competition.
-
I've never crawdaded before.
Last season I was able to fish but no hunting, never even bought a small game license. This year, it looks like I won't be doing any hunting OR fishing, only crabbing. I gotta get my fix somewhere...
I get the idea of trapping bugs, seems straight forward enough and I can learn as I go. Anyone care to share any tips on how to cook, clean and eat the little buggers once I catch some?

That's a nice 8 incher. I'm gonna put out some traps in a few different places tomorrow. Hopefully I can get something to post on Thursday. I'm saving my honey hole from when I was a kid for later this summer. I use to get a few around 8 inches out of it back in the day.

Careful guys the State may get involved in this like the coyote mania contests and deem them illegal. :chuckle:
20 some years ago i did a scuba dive below the Gonzaga bridge in Spokane. There are some daddys down there the size of lobsters. Swift and deep though

I did the same at Perrygin Lake, you can limit in minutes, LOL

On another note..........Lake craws don't bother me, but I kinda wonder about the Spokane river ones due to the upstream heavy metal contamination and them end stage feeders. Eating wise I'm talking

Hehe you guys are funny. No offense taken. It's really not "my" crawdad I mean it's kinda a team effort my other friend Kyle and Matthew hunter are friends of mine and got a good Idea to go do some crawdading. Kyle and Matt made some pots and I got a boat we use. I just posted the picture because I was the only one with pictures . We probably had five 7+ inchers . It was weird a lot of the crawdads had missing limbs for some reason. We were throwing 4 inchers away because they were all so big!

Late weekender report!!!!!!!!! Ohop lake was awful for me! Had a pot soaking for 4hours with fish as bait..... Not a single sign of crawzilla or his offspring!

Nice Sitka, I'm going to be singing that all day, to myself of course...
Suck the heaaaad, squeeze the tip!

Couple things folks. Mods. ...can we make this a sticky or top of page topic? Next and above all else. Keep it light...this isn't waterfowl....this is fun. 'Nuff said about that. Next, keep track of and post your highest pot number of total bugs, throw backs and keepers. Keep posting YOUR biggest. Top three overall length is what we are looking for.
Why? Gotta wait for that. I'll make an announcement soon.
Continue as you were.
-
Pulled 3 traps today and had a total of about 20. Lots of small ones but 3 or 4 that were about 6 inches. And around 10-12 more that were just over 3.5 inches from nose to tail.
-
Good Morning weekend warriors and mudbug fanatics.
Time for the announcement regarding this years fun and frolic.
Here is what I bring you for post number 10k.
This years awards will be as follows:
1st Place, overall length, Hogcraw Trophy and custom pot donated by Mr. Brad Harsman
2nd Place, overall length, Hogcraw Trophy
3nd Place, overall length, Hogcraw Tropy and a dose of shame for your lack of skill and poor mudbuggn' skllls.
Overall high pot count, keepers and throwbacks, Hogcraw Top Pot Trophy and bragging rights about your sheer numbers of bugs.
I've chatted with Dale and we are currently green lighted for this to happen with no issues regarding legal matters and such being a "contest". I'll be taking care of shipping and hope to have the trophies made and available for viewing and posting at the Hunt Wa BBQ hosted by Joe to some and Fishtiq to most. Elk has agreed to help keep a running total of who is in the running for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and overall high pot count. I'm working on graphics and layout of trophies and think they are going to come out very cool. The custom pot will be shipped via Brad and the overall 1st place winner will be responsible for PM including name and address. Same goes for the winners of trophies. I'll be sending out USPS and will of course need full info.
So....get your current pot counts posted, your longest overall bug, and get your pots soaking.
H20 out.

Aaawww :(

Ok...Mods have pinned this up top. Easier to find now. Get to it'll and let's see some full pots.
-
What do you guys do to keep your pots from getting stolen? Had three traps stolen this past week and I heard from another member who lost all his traps as well this past week. MC##### suggested using a trot line type of setup. Any other ideas???
On a side note here is my biggest from my first catch ever last weekend. Was just happy to get some at all let alone find this and a few other 7 inchers.
-
Do we have a prize for the widest crawdad, nice one Colin!
-
Nope. But that one above is pretty darn wide.
-
Right on H20, way to step up to the plate and make this cool... and that last craw is a toad.. that is a pig and with one pincher he is a true warrior.. they loose there pinchers alot of the time from battle and that boy was a warrior you can just tell by looking at that brute.... And to the post of getting pots stollen, its best to use the most camo string you can find, even 50-80 lbs test fishing line will keep it pretty camo, i use parashoot cord and i just had once stolen.. But you know the saying.. "thats just crawdadin.."... I seen decent pots for $10, so atleast its not like a shrimp or crap pot.. ;)
-
I hit up a local creek the weekend before last around Spokane. Seems like the water is too cold still. This place has been reliable but I only saw claws. Gonna try again this weekend! 8)
-
Elk....all graphics and suggestions are now in the hands of the gal doing the work. I've told her about the purpose of the thread and that it is all in fun. We are looking to unveil the awards at the bbq.
Elk...if you get a chance please browse the thread and maybe add some comments to the first post with current top three and pot leader. Even if it is a 20 count pot or a 4 inch 3rd place it will show what they other mudbuggers are shooting for.
-
UDATED THE FIRST POST H20, i just basically cut n pasted your award list to it... right on... im heading out this weekend camping to a pretty good crawdaddy hole... hope to get some slabs.... :rockin:
-
Excellent.....can we shoot for some 'bug'n over the weekend then come early in the week post current leaders in all four trophy positions?
-
Setting pots this weekend too! Gonna have a low country boil for my wifes bitthday party. I'm salivating just typing this.

Nice pulls. I heard from the trophy lady this morning. She is working on basic layout and things are moving forwards. Keep the pics coming and throw up a few of the crawfest when you boil them up.
-
Had an epic weekend camping. The crawdad boil was a highlight.
Caught this beauty on the last pull yesterday, a true 9 incher. There were only five crawdad's in this pot and all of them over 8 inches.

Nice pull Schrimper!!! That's a toad crawfish at 9"!!!!! Good work!

I've spent A LOT of time into finding a decent population of these buggers without much success on the Westside, PM me for more info.
Here are a few pics from the boil last Friday. One thing to note, I caught the daddy's Wednesday morning and I kept them in the crisper drawer in the fridge with a wet towel over them until cooking Friday evening. Not a single one died and they all were as ornery as when they were caught.
-
My girlfriend would kill me if our crisper drawer was full of mud bugs :chuckle:
Nice 9"er, what a toad.

After looking at that boil, I think I got a 9 incher :chuckle:

Alright, I hate to get on here and say this, but someone has got to help me... how the he11 do I catch these *censored*s in Lake Sammamish. They have to be in there... its pretty muddy on the bottom which seems to be a problem. Anyone have any idea?
Bait Tried:
-Freezer burned bear burger
-Freezer burned cured salmon roe
-Freezer burned sockeye
-Fish Guts
Help me, I'm a newb, but I've tried enough times to be damn frustrated.
-
I think your problem is what the bottom is made of. You need some rock, some gravel, lilly pads, wood debris.....something other than plain ol mud sediment.
-

:yeah: I look for bigger rocks. Softball size and up. They live in the cracks and holes. Not so sure our crawfish up here bury in the mud like the ones down south do? :dunno:
-
If I could see the bottom this wouldn't be an issue. Problem is that I cannot. I put one in the lillypads, nothing there. One off the dock, nothing there. One in what looked like it should be a rocky area there (30') nothing there. Is my bait bad? Have I just not found the right spot?
-
With you bait you should be getting a few at least. Not sure if the guys that are getting them are fishing that deep. I don't usually put a pot any deeper than say 10 or 12.
-
Here's an obvious question - are there dads in lake sammammish? Have you ever found remnants on the shores? Dried up shells? Start there first.
Secondly, some lakes can be tough. And some traps work better than others. Your bait seems good enough. Try trout or salmon heads next time to be sure. Also how is the bass/walleye population in the lake? I've always wondered if dads get eaten or picked off before they can scurry into my traps. Lots to think about.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I547 using Tapatalk
-
Lot's of bass in Sammamish and craws are on top of their list to eat. You need to use "fresh bait" not freezer burnt and fish your pots near structure in shallower waters rocks, large stumps, brushy edges, under cut banks, ect. They hide from predators in these areas
-
Stang.....are you soaking overnight? Not sure how much action you will get on a daytime soak.

I dont know if anyone has chimmed in, but all your bait should work, find a rocky bottom and dump your pots about 30 feet of water... or find a creek that is kind of frog water or by log jams, or slow moving pools with big rocks in them and you well get bugs.... Log jams have always been good spots for me.. You just have to through out test pots tell you find the glory hole...
-
Okay folks....holiday weekend coming up....weather is looking good. Lets get some pots soaking and prove that regardless of your elk hunting, bear killing, deer slaying prowess, yote sniping.....you have what it takes to tame the hogcraw.
-
Heading to Cabela's this morning to look at pots. Time to get on the scoreboard... :IBCOOL:
-
Tried some overnight under a dock (2 nights). Maybe there are no 'dads in lake sammamish. I caught a bullhead.
Will continue trying. Maybe my round "factory pots" are no good.

Your factory pots will catch crawdads. I have found the dads to be very spot specific even in a lake with big numbers. I've set five pots and only one or two pots catching dads on numerous occasions and all the pots were within 50' from one to the next. That being said move around until you find them, could even be shallower end of the dock or even the other side. I would say 7-15’ depth range right now. There is alot of great tips already posted.
Check out Terry Bullard’s site there is wealth of information on there, just be careful you will lose hours reading all the information, although I find his exploits fascinating.
-
good soak last night 72 dads in my trap, longest was 8 1/2 inches 3 ft of water mud bottom.can of slightly opened cat food for bait, looks like mudbugs and salad for the 4th

Nice job rasbo

Good haul Rasbo!!!!!!

Dang it, still haven't made it out this year :bash: Maybe this weekend.

Nice one, Rasbo!

Went O'fer this weekend in a lake that 15-20 yrs ago had lots of dads, but since the bass have taken it over it is a bust...
Need to find a westside spot to try...
-
Alright what is the ideal pot to use? How deep? I want to try in the Columbia river by tri cities. Use to flip rocks and catch ton of them by hand when I was a kid.
-
The big C is known for walleye and sturgeon but local Hogcraw legends have been whispered about.

I actually enjoy catching the walleye. Never have fished for sturgeon. Biggest craw I caught by hand was 9 inches. I had a little trap I tried a few times but never had any luck. I tried fish scraps, chicken bones, night crawlers... Would love to get into catching them in a pot. Great eating!

I was at Moses Lake this weekend and put the pot out to see what I could get. Friday, caught one using chicken scraps, not very impressed. Saturday put it out for a couple hours using canned cat food, had two in it decided to leave it over night and the next morning had 5 in it. Happy that I actually caught some, but wished I had a big haul!

I've had the same results. I live in Moses Lake and have found the dad'n to be less than stellar. I caught many walleye this year and many of them were full of dads. I have my suspicions...

Hogcraws are not just given, they must be earned. In time maybe, keep at it. One must begin somewhere.

So want is the goal for this years round of crawdad catching? Last year it was the biggest. Are we going for most in one catch or largest single mudbug. Here is what I caught on the July 4TH weekend.

Stopped by and saw the trophy lady. They will be done and on display at the bbq next weekend. Get out there and soak some pots. Gonna be lame if we don't have a bit more competition.
-
Sounds real good! We wont make it up for the BBQ but can't wait to see the trophies. Some real HOGCRAWS showing up this year. Hopefuly we will connect with some of the HOGCRAW kind soon? God willing and the creek don't rise we will conquer the HOGCRAW!!!!!!
-
Any pot hauls over the weekend? After checking in with the troplie lady I'm pleased to say we are under budget and on time. I should be picking up the finished product on Friday.
-
Trophies are done....anyone been out?
-
Well, since I forgot to take them to the bbq here they are. 2014 Hogcraw awards. Sorry the picture isn't the best but hey, what are you going to do. So, if you want bragging rights over the next guy or gal, want to show your hogcraw pot prowess, need a little garage art....you better step up your game and get the pots soaking. Don't forget, 1st place over all Hogcraw also gets a custom pot shipped to them.
Cheers
-
Those are suuuuuppper cute! Love it! I went to Buffalo Lake on the 17th. I got so wrapped up with the company I was with I really didn't do any measuring or counting like I wanted to. I'll update later with pictures. Again, cool trophies 8)
-
Thanks. The colors are much more vivid in person. The flat ones can be mounted or screwed to the wall....the Top Pot has its own little stand.
-
Looks real good h2o!
-
Is that a work place work station??? Productivity is right out the window.... :chuckle:

-
Nice work, H20....
I have not been soaking any crawdad pots lately, crab has my attention right now. Got a few local spots scouted and I'll let you how it goes.
-
I'm thinking August will be a good month for crawdadding.
-

Anyone pull any pots?
-
I went Saturday night. I didn't think I was going to have a good night since the temp dropped a bunch. I was right, 2 pots and only 5 keepers. Didn't bother taking any pics, one was almost 6inches. Had to throw about 6-7 back because they were too small.
Last year around the same spot, I was pulling around 40 a night and only have one or two to throw back.
Been a real lame summer for me, since this is my first time out this year. Hopefully I'll make it out there again soon.
-
Anything new? When did we say this was ending? Sept?
-
Anything new? When did we say this was ending? Sept?
Seasons open till Oct 31st, so shouldn't it run the whole season?
-
Fine by me....I just don't remember if we set a date. More time for some pot soaking.
-
Maybe we should go until Oct. 31? I don't know what happened to the action this year, but it seems like a lot of us got hampered by something... the fires maybe? I know I lost my mojo a little by the fires because a lot of the lakes I go crawfishing in were around major fires. I don't know of any lakes on the NW side of the state that produces the sizes of dads that eastern washington lakes provide :dunno: . Here's some pictures of my trip to Buffalo Lake on the Colville rez back in July. We didn't get anything over 7" but I probably could have blown everyone out of the water with pot count, but I wasn't the one who went to pull pots to do a proper count of the packed pots at the end of the trip :'( My aunt and I had the most fun catching dads off the dock with a piece of chicken on a hook along with the indian kids  Oh and we seen the worlds biggest beaver on that lake but I couldn't get a good picture of it, from about 600 yards away it looked like a medium sized bear :yike: We seen a good size bull snake and the little snake in the bucket was a baby rattler of some kind that a camper next door caught.
-
Nice. Understood about the fires and life gets busy. Lets keep it going until the end of Oct. That will give folks a little more time waiting for their season to arrive and maybe put a few more on the board. Come Nov 1st we will tally results and get the fancy pants awards mailed out.

whoa whoa whoa!! never tried my hand at this!!! anyone know where to find these guys on the wetside?!
-
:chuckle:
Fishing for tips during the late stages of an event of this magnitude? Please.....c'mon now. Those that have leads on local hogcraws are rarely willing to share. Yeah, you may get some tips like find some lakes with bank access next to a gravel type bottom by cattails....you may get a few tips like use local forage for bait...but not any honey holes. You see, ;), local hogcraw legends have been around a long time. So have those that persue them. Your best bet may be to hit the local tavern on karoake night, buy a few cold ones, and see what you can pry out of locals.
Seriously....find some local waters and get a pot out. Never to late to get in on the fun.
-
Also, for any latecomers the awards are shown on page 8 of this thread. Don't forget the custom pot in addition for our 1st place finisher.
-
im gunna have to! never tried it and always wanted to taste the little *censored*ers, and i dont care to much for the compatition i just wanna catch and eat some
-
I've had a few from local waters and they are indeed tasty. Few of the guys sure have it dialed in on the east side. Good luck and hope to see some pics of 'bugs from you.
-
Had some decent luck on a local Westside lake with a two night soak, five nice ones about eight inches with a few smaller 6-7 inchers thrown in.
Made Crawdad omelets for breakfast, there were tasty. Oh, and my homemade traps seem to be working well.
-
Nice catch!
-
Crunch time...........getting down to the end here.
-
Nice catch schrimper!!!!!!!!
-

Bump.....awards are ready to go...just need a final tally of who get's 'em!
-
Sure was a fun season! We had just as much fun crawdadding as shrimping or crabbing and WAY easier. I really enjoyed reading everyone’s reports, my favorite HuntWA thread of 2014.
Who ended up being the big winner of crawdad mania 2014?
-
Not sure....awards are sitting on my tool bench waiting to be sent.
-
My custom pot for the winner is waiting to find out who the winner is. Sounds like we need a judge to comb through all the entries and deliver the results. Any takers?
-
As the OP, I nominate Elkpiss.
-
shrimper i think had the biggest with 9 incher and there were a few other 8 1/2's
-

Are the clear winners not getting back to you guys for the prizes or what? I feel like a winner right now, does that count?
-
You ARE a winner sir!
Nope...haven't heard anything.
-
I will go through and compile a list of all the entries.
-
Okay this is what I came up with:
Largest Hogcraw
Shrimper – 9”
Mzangara - 8¾”
Rasbo - 8½”
Moocher97 – 8”
Shrimper – 8”
Shrimper – 8”
Brad Harshman - 7¾”
Brad Harshman - 7½”
MathewHunter98 - 7½”

MC37493 - 6½”
Chiefeng - 5½”
BKMFR – 4½”
Total Pot Count
Rasbo - 72
Brad Harshman – 52
Elkpiss – 51
Rasbo had an 85 but not sure if that was in one pot.

Those are some awesome stats! Really gives you an idea of what the State of Washington has to offer in the crawfish world. Definently an under utilized sport!!!!

Please PM Mr. Harshman for pot shipping info.

We're all winners! I enjoyed a couple low country crawdad boils this year. Love catching the dads and love chowing them down too.
-

I agree...
I have a few camping trips planned this year all revolving around catching dads, can't wait!
Last year's Hogcraw thread motivated me to build a few traps and try it out. Ironically the square traps I found at a garage sale out fish my Terry Bullard style homemade traps.
A HUGE thanks to, Brad, H20, Elkpiss & anyone else I missed.
-
I hope this gets done next year as well. Lots of fun. I'm thinking next year the top 3 winners get handicapped an inch!
-
GREAT JOB EVERYONE!!!
Shrimp congratulations, I received your PM. I'll get that pot to you ASAP.

Impressive catches!
I am a crawdad newbie and not sure where to post a few questions but this seems the most active.
1. What time of year is best to catch crawdads with a trap in NW WA?
2. Any tips on crawfish trapping a large river without a boat, just waders? Ditto for lakes?
A year ago I tried a wimpy little trap in a mud bottom river eddy beside a rock rubble causeway where I have seen large crawdads. In two nights caught only one pike minnow. Since then I have bought a better trap, read Terry Bullard's stuff and all of the posts here. Ready to try again.
-
Pm received from the top mudbuggers. Hope to send out awards early next week.
-
goodtimes foresure...oh and good eats...thanks guys Cant wait to see what this year brings,,Pm sent
-
Should be arriving via USPS today folks.
-
1st time I read this thread and it was really cool :chuckle: Love the pot designs. I can see that this is something that I will get into when I move back to Eastern WA.
Do many of the Lakes in the Colville area have them?
-
Displayed proudly on the cabinet above my desk.
Thanks H20!
-
got mine today,Got the trophies in my living room for all to see.thanks guys what a blast, with this warmer weather it wont be long until its that time again,,,woo hoo
-
Received Brad's trap today, it looks fishy, wait I mean crawdaddy…
With this warm weather it will be a good early season, can't wait to try it out in a couple months. I’m sure this trap is going to catch some serious crawdads.
Thanks again Brad!
-
Great job H20 on those Awards, they turned out awesome.. the last couple years we have been posting this Crawdad tourny and its really catching wind.. its all in good fun, and its cool to see some people trying it out giving it a shot... My son is 3 almost 4 and he thinks crawdads are coolest thing ever.. pulling the string with him is what its all about.. Should be a good mudbug season this year with the warmer temps.. and for the guy who asked the best time to soak the pots, its best when the water is the warmest so August is when you should get the good numbers.... Again thanks to H20 for really getting this thing rolling...
-
Gotta get mine out and soak a few this year.....I got a few ideas about some hogcraws around the Snohomish.....don't tell but every year I've ventured down to the bank I've seen some real beasts working over humpie bits and pieces.
