You can fish some of the bays if it is too rough in the strait.  There are halibut in them.  Could also go out near protection island.

You certainly can! And if the quota lasts longer its more big females into the shallows to spawn.  and better weather chances too.

I'll be out there with my bro and dad. We're gonna do the inshore thing around Protection Island unless the forecast changes. We're also gonna shrimp Disco Bay on Saturday. Stay safe out there!

We got a late start due to a boat issue. We showed up at John Wayne ramp at about 11:00, just in time for the intense lightning/hail/torrential rain storm to start in. We opted to wait it out and then bagged it for the day since it didn't seem to be improving. We checked the PA ramp at about 1:30, the fish checker had 15 for 22 boats. We're gonna give another try in the morning.

Halibut come in shallow to feed, go deep (2000+ feet) to spawn.

:yeah: Halibut spawn at depths of 1500+ they feed shallow in our coastal waters in the spring and summer then migrate outward to the continental shelf to spawn in the winter months. I don't think many people are aware they are a migratory fish

No dice for us today on 'buts. I did keep my streak of never even getting a bite when fishing out of John Wayne Marina. Next time its PA or bust! We did get a nice haul of shrimp though to ease the pain. There were several folks cleaning fish when we came back in to the ramp. Don't know what the count was though.
