Title: Tucannon bear.
Post by: Hill on May 11, 2014, 06:39:17 PM
Anybody been over in the tucannon unit lately?  I'm having a tough time locating bears. Was hoping some shed or turkey hunters might have run into a few. I spent the last 4 days over there but the weather was less the good wind was blowing hard most of the time, snow drifts kept me out of some of the upper country. Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks

When I hunted it in the fall we saw quite a bit of scat a couple miles from the wilderness on the west side bordering dayton about 1-2 miles from the wenaha

When I was over on the other side of the hill (Mountain View Unit) the first weekend of May.  I saw bears twice.  One was around 3000' elevation and the others were up at 4000-4200' elevation.  The difference in plant growth between 3000' and 5000' was significant.  Grasses and wild onions were just starting to come up at 5000+' and were pretty well established up high.  I would guess that with some rain and some good warm sunny days over the last week the bears should be working there way up to the higher elevations over the next couple weeks.  I'm not sure how the Tucannon compares to Mountain View but I would expect the bear pretty much act the same.  Good luck and I hope you find a nice bear.

In the past I've seen a fair amount of bear just driving on the boarder road of the tuccannon and the mountain view, good luck and keep at it.  I saw the biggest bear in the state when I was driving back to camp with my small blonde bear in the back of my truck, he was running down the road.

Ended up finding a nice boar on Saturday.  Glassed him from 1.5 miles away and was lucky enough to have him stay put until I could get  there to chat! Laid down with the tripod at 528yrds and watched for a few minutes until he gave me the perfect shot. Had my dad, my 8 year old and 16 year old son up hunting with me but they decided to go fishing that afternoon so didn't get very good pictures. Had him caped and quartered out by the time the sun was going down. Nothing like hiking out of some of most beautiful country god made as the sun is going down on a awesome hunt.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F05%2F28%2Fe9ysyzu8.jpg&hash=c1932c5a411641b7e3f17d6cdfc4e9404e40066a)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F14%2F05%2F28%2F9ehudy5u.jpg&hash=c5f5ffcb3ac78d6ed8691193aca00d8af5b97cc5)

Grandpa and his grandkids.
This hunt turned out to be a blast it was a little tough to turn up bears the in one day the light switch turned on and they decided to show up. Most people don't understand why I spend so much time and money to chase animals all over these western states, they will never know the feeling of being able to get away from everything, no phones, computers, traffic the only noises you hear are the quite conversation you get to have with your family as you sit on a hill side glassing over gods country;)

Excellent bear! Nice shooting from 500+ too. What caliber? Did you already have the sight settings for 500? How close were you to point of aim on the bear?

Cheers!  :cue:

Was shooting a 30-378 with 180 accubonds. The scope is set up to shoot out to 1000yrds and me and the boys shoot pretty often. Wanted to shoot one at 800 to 900yrds so my boy will quit bragging about having the longest 1 shoot kill on a buck in Entiat at 634yrds with a steep decline in elevation he was only 12 at the time and he reminds me often.
Point of impact was off by 4" was trying for high shoulder and had a little more wind drift to the right than I compensated for.
