Title: Upper Columbia River CATFISH help
Post by: Jrzbullelk on May 19, 2014, 08:45:59 AM: Hello I have been wondering a lot about this so figured id ask. I would like to find a spot were I could catch some catfish in the upper Columbia around the Wenatchee-Chelan area, I have been trying to catch some in the lakes all around here but no luck anywere so now I'm wondering about the river. Any help will do I just want to get some catfish thank you :dunno:

Post by: deltaops on May 20, 2014, 03:11:43 PM: Never fished the Columbia, not sure if I ever will get the chance too. On the wet side Alder Lake has some cats. My son caught a few last year off red worms. All I caught were small perch. :bash:

Post by: jrebel on May 20, 2014, 03:14:41 PM: Never heard of anyone catching cats on the columbia in this area. I know quite a few die hard fisherman and all they really fish in the area is salmon and walleye.

Would love to hear if there are channel or blue cats in this area. I will ask a few buddies....

I've heard from guys who do fisheries work that they have accidentally caught large cats while fishing for pike minnows. If I remember correctly they were caught upstream of the dam in approximately 80ft of water. Guess a guy could anchor down and drop a line above any dam and see what they catch. I've heard that sucker fish cut into steaks work really well as bait for cats. I want to try this so bad!

Post by: DOUBLELUNG on May 20, 2014, 03:53:56 PM: The only Wenatchee area fishing I'm aware of for channel cats are Roses Lake near Manson and Big Bow Lake (one of the Rock Island ponds at, of course, Rock Island).

It has known catfish up to Priest Rapids; most of you guys over there I'm sure already know more than the report...

Post by: teal101 on May 21, 2014, 09:37:47 AM: There are Channel cats in most of the Rock Island ponds and in the Columbia here in town. I've caught a few out of the ponds this year. Roses has them as well. They can get pretty big, but a lot of smaller ones.

Post by: Brad Harshman on June 03, 2014, 02:43:40 PM: Keep at it! I've been told that cats follow the scent trail of the bait so you want to leave it in one place for a long time. Thanks for the update too. Head to the big river and plunk some worms and catch a sucker fish. They're supposed to be one of the best natural baits you can use.

Cut bluegill or Berkley products has worked for me. I found they bite best right at dusk for me. My buddy saw a 10lb+ one in Roses last Saturday, couldnt get it to bite. Big Bow can be hit or miss, but they are in there! Keep at it. :tup:
