Watching some show on TV made me think. Has anyone ever tried cooking and eating the jingle berries from a deer or elk? :yike:

Oh boy. Uh, yes. Not me, but one of my hunting buddies tried it. After we egged him on for quite some time. I was present for the event. They were cooked in a pan. Once the slicing commenced and the white juices spilled forth everyone LOL'd and lost their appetites.
Really that's a no sh*tter...

It's amazing how good "criadillas" were and how bad "rocky mountain oysters" were :chuckle: All served on the same plate in Alberta ;) The criadillas were pounded flat, breaded, deep fried and served with some type of smoked gouda and a dipping sauce. Wholly smokes were they good! Not the best of texture, but the flavor made up for it. Then some genius at the table started laughing and spilled the beans that those are the same thing as Rocky Mountain Oysters. Suddenly I had an allergic reaction and my throat became swollen and I found it very difficult to swallow...which I desperately wanted to do! I generally figure I can force just about anything down. Especially if I've already tasted it and liked it. But man! I just couldn't get it done after I knew.
Years later, after I had come to grips with the shock I intentionally ordered an appetizer of lamb fries while on a ski trip in Bend. Going there on my own seemed to make all the difference. I actually think the criadillas tasted better though the texture of the lamb fries was much more to my liking. Both way better than raw shellfish oysters!
I do not see where mature deer, elk, sheep or bovine testicles would be worth the time and effort. I'd expect the strength of the taste and the softened texture would not be as good as the lamb and calf. Guess I'd have to ask a true cattleman about that...or KCKcker! In my mind the mature testicle just doesn't work. Though that first experience has proven, right or wrong, that my mind isn't going to allow the possibility of it passing my lips. Pretty sure that ain't going to happen :chuckle:

The last whitey I killed in Montana: the next day we saw a crow take off from the gut pile, hanging out of his beak was the bucks twig and berries, one of the funniest things I ever seen while hunting

Getem out of the satchel . Peel the membrane off. Slice them into 1/4" or so and batter them with pancake batter. Heat some oil in the skillet and cook until both sides are golden brown. Super tasty snacks!!!! :tup:

I have ate deer and elk. I basically gut them then slice them. Roll in flour, season, and fry. They are great. And they are very tender.

I can't imagine being so desperate for something to eat! You know if you're really hungry you can always get a cheeseburger from mcdonalds for $1.00. Or, Top Ramen is cheap.

Maybe so? I'd rather eat the healthy alternative of natural raised elk balls than some saturated fat burger from heart attack central. :chuckle:

I am hunting with my nephew who has not killed an elk yet. If he gets one this year, I'm gonna talk him into doing it :chuckle: :chuckle: (me and bush beer)

Arnt we as hunters taught through our mentors to use all edible and non edible parts of the animals we harvest? If you don't eat them you should at least donate them to the local food bank. :chuckle:

My group usually gets a few deer every year and I will save all of them and you can have yourself a big meal o balls ....there's things that we should just not eat this is one of them :puke:

Ok, I have to ask, what is a naturally raised elk ball? :chuckle: And for the record, I could be stuck on a deserted island starving to death and still not eat one, and I have eaten some pretty narly stuff.

Let's just say “no nut left behind" is now the standard! Butterfly em' and batter them up in a little pancake flour with some garlic powder, salt & pepper and toss them in a frying pan with a little butter, and you're good to go! mmm-mmm good :tup:

So I can now say "been there done that" :chuckle:
My Nephews and I took the plunge and fried up the ones from his buck. I found very little taste to them, they were not horrible, nor were they excellent, just meh. Next I am going to try the ones from my moose this year, this has me a little worried cause there is a good chance he will be killed while in the rut :yike:

Tried them a couple times. Weren't anything special or horrible in my book. But a couple of Okie that hunted with us when I as young fried them up first thing whenever one of them got an elk. Was a specil treat to them.
American mountain men used to eat boudins or guts filled with chyme or partially digested food from the buffalo they killed. I'd eat oysters again before I tried Boudins.

We did in camp last week - deer balls. They were fine - not much flavor without breading and deep frying.
