 Something to consider!

I have missed a couple but not many of the great hunts posted on this site, and don't remember a single hunt story or picture from a hunt on one of those 4-0, Pine Mountain or Black Rock ranches.

There have been several youth hunt posts too, of guys asking for info, stories and pics of these hunts with very very few replies with info.

So, either these successful applicants/hunters are all keeping it hush hush, or these hunts have not panned out and are not all what they are touted to be. :twocents:

Hunting on the 4-0 thet charge an access fee I believe. The 1040 hunts are on the WDFW recently purchased portion of the 4-0.

I talked to a guy at Bogan's once that had drawn a late cow tag.  He had a dead cow in the truck and said there were lots of elk and the 4-0 guys told him right where to go.  I don't know if they charge a fee or not but it seemed to work out OK for him.

They are NOT supposed to charge a fee if you draw the wdfw permit, that is what I was told in the past from wdfw. Great hunt area's for elk that's for sure, no need for it to be hush hush, it should be a no brainer if you draw. Go for it and good luck.

they own a ton of property...if you are allowed to hunt all their land it has a lot of elk!

They have some giant rams on the property...a 190+ I know of

The state gives them elk and deer tags that they can sell in exchange for offering draw tags and free access to their land.  I am family friends with the owners of all the pine mountain property and one of my old supervisors (retired now) buys one of the deer tags every year.  Not a trophy hunt but def a fun hunt.

I drew that tag in 2009, easiest cow I ever got, then again I was in the right location at the right time, back then their hunts were in August, it was hot as heck and while my buddy was quartering I had to hike down and get the ranch guys to drive to the kill site and help take her out (as per their instructions). Nice bunch of people, they asked if I wanted to go back at night and shoot some coyotes feeding on the guts, I passed b/c I needed to take the cow to a fridge b/c of the heat.
No fees charged. They had no issues with my friend tagging along as long as he was unarmed.

I applied for the 4-0 Ranch as well.  I searched for an hour tonight trying to find if there was an access fee but came up short.  Here is a link to Wildlife refuges in the US, select WA and you will get the entire list, but 4-0 Ranch is not part of it.  Good information regardless.  Happy Hunting!

thank you for your search efforts !! ( 3 months !!!) I really believe I need to be checked I already cant get the tracking thing out of my head so I can sleep,i believe I have found my elk if hes not going to get all migratory on me,so any way I don't think 4-0 is in my plans this season.

The 4-0 ranch is not a wildlife refuge which is why it is not listed.  The WDFW has started buying land surounding the 4-0 ranch land and if I remember correctly are planning to buy the entire ranch.  The ranch itself is owned by a cattle company, and they allow hunting by special permit.

I drove to the property last month, before I applied for my Quality Elk permit. Game department seems to be doing lots of work on the property; new fences up front etc.

Any pics or sites anyone can reference to check out any kills made on the property?

Have you done a search on here for it?  I seem to recall someone posting about it in the last year or two.

Bring a book to read. They have a rock falling crew there all Summer. They open and close it every 45 minutes. This would be the main road that winds downhill to Bogans store. I got lucky and only waited 5 minutes.

I was over there on Memorial Day weekend, saw a couple hundred elk every night! It's heaven on earth. Saw one bull that was as big as a dinosaur.

im going with t-Rex, he was right next to some land that is fore sale!  2 20 acre lots, 99,000 each. And a 40 ac for 199,00.  It would be a great place to retire but pretty for from any real towns.

Lewiston/Clarkston isn't that far away and the have a costco, Safeway and a commercial airport. Pretty much everything most people despise about an hour away. :)

really appreciate the info guys, starting to think I should have had it as a choice on my draws shuuucks,of course by the time I get another chance there will be some guy at the gate with a atm terminal running on a generator hooked up to some bank owned satellite , and he will ask me for my reservation take my access fee after what I have already paid, and point me to were to park and were to hunt, and what time to hunt.,then tell me when to leave, in other words it will more resemble a drive in movie, but of course 1300 people will put in for this insanity for a couple years then all this will dye off ,hoof rot ,blue tuong,or they will add wolves to the big show, and then they will move to the cascades and open another theater, and so on and so on,any way,  (  3 - months- !! )          :bash:  sill putting in on the insanity and loving it !! :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

Jburke.....I am aware of the 4-0 Ranch not being part of the US wildlife refuges, I even said the ranch was not part of it and was only sharing related hunting information.  What part of what I said did you not understand?

I guess I just missed the last part. Guess I just didn't see the relevance of the US wildlife refuge information regarding the 4-0 ranch.  Either way,  it has the potential to be a great hunt for those that draw.  Good luck in the draw to you.

Hunted it years ago, Old man Odom allowed hunting but when the son took over he shut it down. Then  he started allowing fee hunting and now the state is slowly buying it up. There is a back way into the area, from Pomeroy south over the main Mt Rd and down into Troy OR. When you hit the OR. border stay to the left and you'll hit the Grouse Flats part of the ranch. The Ranch starts at Cougar Ck on the east and runs to Grouse flats and in between you have Wenatchee  canyon.

I took a 5 pt with a ML when it was open to hunting, but it was N of the ranch.

If you drive up the Cougar Ck RD to FS boundary there's a rd on the left leads to a small campsite. There are 3 rds going south, the  one in the middle or right side  are probably the best bet. If there not cabled you can drive all the way to 40 line it'll be a fence running E&W. I've seen big mules on the breaks of Wenachee canyon its FS ground.

The 4-0 ranch is part of elk area 1040 which is a closed area if you drew a Mt. View tag. I drew an any bull tag in there and need to know what is open and what is not. Some good national forest landjust north of the ranch.
