Title: good gun smith?
Post by: beaslayer6 on May 23, 2014, 10:51:10 PM: hi, I'm looking for a good gun smith to look at my 7mm wsm chamber. The bolt will close on factory ammo but its super tight with my reloads. They are perfectly to the book specs. and gun is clean. anyone had this happen to them before. the bullet is not hitting the rifling. ?????? thanks

Post by: Blacktail Sniper on May 24, 2014, 04:40:05 AM: Was the brass in your reloads originally fired in that rifle or a different one? Could be if they are from another rifle and not full length resized, there may be a slight difference in chambers.

Post by: Biggerhammer on May 24, 2014, 07:22:41 AM: It could be a number of things and a little difficult to pin point with out the exact process of the reloading procedure. As for the bullet not touching the lands, simple. You are seated to deep, if this is on a short action it's fairly common. You will run out of room for overall length in the mag box or magazine before you can get the overall length long enough to touch the lands and also feed from the mag box or magazine.

That's why I had my 7mm WSM throated for the heavier VLD Bullets and built it on a long action. The 190gr Matrix bullets are wicked stuff in it.

First try chambering your sized brass and see if you have any problem there. If it chambers like factory loads you know your problem is in the bullet seating operation. If it doesn't chamber empty you can find the culprit by smoking the brass, chambering it and seeing where the problem is. If it isn't setting the shoulder back enough you can take a few thousandths off the top of the shell holder. If it isn't sizing the body enough you might have to send the die back to the manufacture with an explanation and a sized piece of brass that doesn't fit in your chamber.

If the problem is only with loaded ammo more than likely your seating die is set too deep and your hitting the crimp ring as your seating the bullet and pushing the neck back enough to bulge the shoulder, it can be slight enough that you can't see it but you can mike the shoulder diameter before and after seating. Easy fix just back off the seating die.

Post by: beaslayer6 on May 24, 2014, 01:59:19 PM: thanks guys. it is a full sizing die. it was shoot in it. and I have tried chambering the brass before the bullet and it still does it. the factory is just little bit small at the step down .033 which is all it takes. and the reload brass is perfecty to book. so my chamber is just a bit small. is the only thing it could be.

Post by: Rich_S on May 24, 2014, 04:51:21 PM: I've had this trouble with a different caliber (in two different guns). Turned out both of the chambers were a tad short and the brass needed to be trimmed a few thou below factory specs. Worked fine after that.
