I recently took possesion of two of these. One is carbine length, the other rifle size. Both are extremely nice in terms of fit abd finish and the stocks arent all oil soaked and punky. One has been drilled and tapped. They really are a marvel of metal. I have a few questi ons.. What level of intensity can they handle, assuming rebarreling? Is the 91 small or large ring? And assuming sporterization,, what can be done about that large obtrusive magazine? Thanks!

My dad bought me one of those (surplus from Warshal's) about 1959. I had the same questions. My hunting buddy at the time had an 8mm Mauser and I had a case of "size" envy. I knew absolutely zero about guns at that time. The ballistics of the 7.65 Mauser are pretty good - not bad enough to be worth rebarreling, IMHO. The magazine, being single stack is different, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One of the things I really didn't care for was the design cocked on closing, rather than opening, like more modern rifles.
If you want something different, I suggest you sell these hallmark early Mausers and replace them with the rifle of your choice of caliber and configuration. Perhaps a Remington 788 or something comparable in value.

91's are small ring. if you like them as is, great! but if you're looking to hotrod one or change caliber, i'd at least look for a '98, if not a more modern version like the JC Higgins version, Parker Hale, Browning, Interarms, etc...
'91's are really neat rifles, but you're going to have A LOT of time an money in changing one.
