Title: Trophy Rock?
Post by: Jayfire83 on May 24, 2014, 06:39:24 PM
I got too lazy to make my own salt block and was thinking about throwing a trophy rock out in front of one of my cams, what do you think?

I've had much better results with loose salt.

Over here, Trophy Rock hands down for us............over the years, weve compared blocks and loose salt and minerals......nice thing about the rocks is theyre easy to pack up and move locations...........

I do stir loose salts into the soil on most sites, I just figured I would throw one in my pack and use it in conjunction with the loose stuff.

If, by "over here", you mean eastern Washington, that's the only place I've ever used loose salt. I haven't compared it to any rocks or blocks but I can't imagine it being any better than the loose stuff. What kind of loose salt did you try?

do they work? yes...does trace minreal salt work? yes... I prefer to buy 50lb bags of salt versus a trophy rock far cheaper and last way longer. The elk pound salt if your using rocks then you better buy a bunch! Elk will eat 50lbs of salt in a couple weeks!

:yeah: 6$ for 50 lb of salt is a bargain compared to a small rock for 3-4 times the cost.

This is why I only bought one to try out when I first got a trail cam.  I also tried some other home made blocks with molasses and a few other things mixed in.  Deer loved them, but so did the bear. I didn't hunt the area the bear found one though.  Not a single elk on that cam, deer, bear, and moose but no elk.

Go to the feed store, not Sportsmans.

You can go with the loose salt as mentioned above, or you can get a plain ole salt lick. Those are $7-10 for 50lb blocks, as opposed to $20 for a 15 pound rock at Sportsmans.

Go to a feed store and look in the section with their stock feed. I use trace salt with selenium and its like $8 for a 50 lb bag

I've Had Good Results With Both.  I Have Pics Of Bulls Laying On The Ground Licking A Trophy Rock Like A Dog At A Food Bowl.  I Put Out Both At The Same Site.

I use loose salt  on the Westside. High humidity or any rain turn the salt pile in to a hard mount pretty much right off the bat.  I replenish about every week or two depending on schedule.  Elk eat a lot of salt this time of year and will start to taper off come the end of August and early September. Really good way to inventory the animals in the area.  The main purpose for the loose salt is we pack it in quite aways and its just easier to carry than a block or a rock, and cheaper.
