Took my over under apart so I could refinish the stock, but ran into this. Doesn't quite look like rust in real life(like it does in the pic)
It just wipes off, and has a grease like consistency. Do I clean it up, or let it be?
-
I'm a bit color blind, but to me it looks like grease that has absorbed some of the stain from the stock. I'd clean it off and re-grease in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. :twocents:

Looks like grease or oil that has run into the area and gummed up. clean it out and re-lube. It's not doing any good there, and will absorb moisture and cause rust. (You aren't using WD-40, are you?) :nono:

Never used WD40.
I'll clean it out, and oil it up. Thanks guys.

I see it is on both sides , It might be some type of Beeswax or other sealant to keep stuff from migrating through the wood to metal joint there. I'd call the manufacture and ask them.

Manufactured in Russia. Would have a hard time getting a hold of them. :(

Probably cosmoline. :twocents:
