Im curious to how others do it. I have been trying spot and stalk so far but have yet to spot any bulls. :dunno: do you guys use calling to locate or just spot and stalk/ run and gun. I've tried some calling but I dont know how to speak the langue lol. Im thinking my calling is hurting me more that helping. I've put a 100+ miles on my boots this year so far and have found lots of sign. Had a cow talk back to me Sunday but after I closed the gap she had already moved out of dodge. Also is there any books on elk hunting the later season. All the materiel im finding seems to only deal with hunting the rut(archery/muzz). Thanks for any tips

On the Westside I've personally had the most success still hunting timber patches. I don't call during rifle season.

I'm on the westside a s well. Calling during modern season won't get you very far with bulls. Get up high with some good glass and spend some time. Grid search prospective areas below. If you see nothing of interest wait a half our and cover the search area again to see if anything has moved to where it's visible. I've done this a lot to identify areas to concentrate on because I know there is a legal in the area. I've even put a few Bulls to bed at last light and had a plan to get them the next morning. Sometimes it actually works...

What seems to work for us is using a group of guys and everyone basically goes a different direction the first day. Then the ones that find the best sign take a few more people with them the next day. The group gets on the trails and narrows it down and puts them to bed that night. Next morning everybody encircles where the herd was put to bed and everyone works their way in doing a mix of drive and still hunt towards the area that is easiest to pack out of. The next day, guys move over to the next area that had the best sign.
