Title: Stainless Ruger American vs 700 adl
Post by: chuckster on June 11, 2014, 09:30:58 PM
Am buying a new elk, bear, deer rifle for this season. And am looking at either the new all weather ruger american or the stainless rem 700 adl. Both are about $440 bucks for the 700 that includes a chepo scope. The ruger would be in .270, but if I go with the rem 700 it would be 300 win mag. Cant get the 300 mag in the ruger. I like how light the ruger is and it has a detachable mag, its a great gun for the money, my wife has one in .308 (not a all weather). However I would like to get a 300 win mag for elk which leads to the 700. Best thing would to have both calibers I know, and will. But for this year its just one or the other. Any thoughts on what path to take.

model 700 remington is the most customized, accuracy built action that exists. tons of options.

If you buy the ruger you won't have to do any after market work  to make it shoot better.

 :yeah:

I bought the same rifle your wife has, slapped a scope on it and had it zeroed in in 5 shots.

I can reach out and hit a normal sized water bottle at 300 yards with no adjustments to wind age.

Oh and I did it with TULU Ammo.

Well went down to look at the 700 and they said it had been recalled. Cant order it and they don't know when they might have it again.

Just another reason to go with the American!

I'd take the ruger over a new 700 for sure.

What Bofire said is true.
If you plan on customizing your rifle, it is hard to beat the availability of options for the 700 ADL.

If you want a out of the box shooter, of the two, take the Ruger.

Honestly I have never cared for the quality of the 700  or the accuracy (out of the box) of the 700s I have shot.

There is no denying that you can build a 700 ADL into very capable shooter reasonably cheaply.

From a bone stock Remington 700 ADL synthetic, purchased for 319.00 new from Bi-Mart.

I agree! The "Older" 700's just seem to have better fitment, smoother actions and just overall better quality.  Bought a new ADL a couple years ago and just didn't care for any part of it.  Bolt cycled like it was full of sand, stock felt and flexed like it was made from a Coolwhip container's lid, horrendous trigger, just very poor workmanship.

That being said, the 700 does offer lots of options if you want to build something special down the road.  If you just want a hunting rifle, I would say go with the Ruger, always has been a solid platform and reliable workhorse in my experience.

Hilarious and about the best description I have seen for the plastic 700 stocks.

To th OP, let's us know what you choose!  Gonna have too look hard for a new Remington after the recall, Rugers are readily available. As above, some bone stock Remingtons can be superb shooters occasionally, but reports on the American is that they are consistently accurate, well made guns!

Of the two, I'd lean Ruger. Maybe find an A-Bolt on sale somewhere?

Remington hands down if you plan on doing anything to the rifle.  The action in the two really isn't comparable.  I assume throwing away the stock and trigger for any production rifle in that price range anyway.
