Title: My son drew Mt. goat for the 2nd time in Washington
Post by: Dan-o on June 11, 2014, 09:46:44 PM
So, a couple years ago, when they had the false run, my son drew goat.  but NO JOY.

Today, her drew GOAT   Mt. Washington B

Should be fun.

We've never been out in that neck of the woods.

P.S.  If you happen to know anything about goat locations out there, feel free to PM me.

Also, having never hunted goats before.....

What advice on planning?

Does anyone know if WDFW has a goat biologist, or any other tips on people to talk with?

Thanks,

Dan

In many places they seek out salt...  :pee: On flat rocks out in the open and the salt will pull them in... At least they did when i was out in the olympics.  :twocents:

I live in Shelton, not too far from there. If you ever need a hand let me know. My girlfriend is friends with a biologist that has worked with these goats so I can probably put you in contact with him.

I hunted the area back in '94 when it was archery only.  The WDFW will steer you in the right direction as far as where the goats are.  One thing to keep in mind:  according to the WDFW, the future of this hunt might depend on lack of conflicts with hikers.  Please don't walk up the Mt Ellinor trail and shoot a goat in front of a bunch of hikers like someone did around the time when I hunted it.  There are other spots to hunt where there are less chance of conflict.  Mt Pershing and Mt Washington would be a couple of other bets.

Get up and check the roads. Been awhile but the road above Jefferson Lake that leads to a drainage between Mt. Washington and Mt. Pershing may be washed out. Back in the day it held some goats.

That's awesome! I know the area well, just some advice.
Due to the amount of hikers. stay away from Ellinor and Rose. Start at Washington and hunt NE, there will be hikers but not nearly as many.

Dan-O, I also drew the Mt Washingtopn goat tag, but the A. Have you talked to Jeff Skriletz, with WDFW?  He mentioned they will be flying the area either the last week of Aug or the first week of Sept to count the goats and to call him then and he will have more info about the location of the majority of the goats.  Trying to keep us awat from the hikers I believe.  How old is your son?

Yes, I talked to Jeff.     Seemed like a super guy - wanting to help us and keep peace with hikers.

My son is 20.   He's in great shape.   Big frame, but runs 5-6 day a week.

His father is a different story.........   although I've lost 35 pounds.   I have a semi-bum ankle.......

And now for the hard part:

My kid is 20, and about to head back for his Jr. year at Montana State.

He's working an internship this year and they just invited him on a 10 day trip to China......

Guess right where the trip falls.................     :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

The boy has a tough choice.

Obviously , he wants to go on the goat hunt.

But he absolutely LOVES the company he's interning with and wants to go to China with them.

I'm sick.....   He has to make a decision pronto.

Hey Dan-o,

I know your son, I was just talking with him Sunday about his goat tag and giving him a hard time about thinking about not hunting!

Tough choice for sure. You have a great kid.

Hmmmmm.....   Interesting.   Now my curiosity is very peaked about how/where you talked to my kid......

Do you have a kid that's going to go to MSU?

If so, we might want to have a dad-to-dad talk about a few good things I've learned.    Worthwhile discussion if you want.

He's been to a few of our church events with his friend Spencer. We were at Spencer's house Sunday when he stopped by to pick him up on their way to the Mariners game. We were talking hunting and he mentioned his dilemma.

Oh man! That is a character building choice, there!  Bright side is, if he decides to go to china and not fill his tag, he can keep applying and get drawn in another 20 yrs or so. ;)

I hope he makes a decision soon because if he turns the tag back in that won't give the alternate much time to get ready or get any information or get in shape.

No goat.

One absolutely stellar opportunity -thanks to Nature Boy.

A goat really should have come home with us, but........  that's the way things go sometimes.
