This is my first post on this site. Thought I would share my most recent story. Anyone ever have an elk jump the string? This happened to me over the weekend. Thought I had my first archery elk. :IBCOOL: Instead, I had just missed him as he dropped his body to gather his legs. :bash: 40 yard shot, his head behind a tree, nothin' but broadside flashing lights pointing to his heart and lungs. Oh well, 14 days left, hopin' for another chance. I can't eat another tag, I'm full from my bear and deer tag. :puke:

I have a friend I took out archery hunting for the first time 4 years ago up around Ashford, he has a huge 6x7 walk by at 50 yards, takes the shot and the thing reacted like a cat!!!! He said it was amazing how quick it dropped to the ground and spun around, the arrow just missed the top of his back!!!!!
He still has not killed an elk.......he has nightmares about that bull.

Hard to belive an elk can drop that low to miss it completely. Never happened to me before.

I had a big cow do the same on the 21st in hte Winston unit, stuck the arrow about 40" up in the tree right behind where the vitals were.... :dunno: Man they have quick reflexes!!!

Never had an elk do it.... Whitetail deer, now that's another story...

I only had two occasions where they jumped the string, but it only happened when they already spooked. If not spooked, they don't even know it.

The last one I shot that was alerted to me at 25 yards didnt have a chance. She saw me draw, and froze looking right at me. I released the arrow and it found its mark before she could move. more likely to happen at further distances.

Had a bull spin at 42 yards from 90 degrees broadside, to almost facing me when the arrow hit - still behind the shoulder, but angling back. 4 hours later, tracked him 260 yards to where he was laying head-bobbing sick, but not expired. Got two more into him, ran another 110 yards and piled up dead.

Well, let's see here! Nope, I've never had a bull or seen a bull jump the string, deer yes but never an elk. It's a fair guess to say I've seen 150+ arrows fly towards elk, sure they give their famous dip at times but never enough to miss completely. I would say ones shot was off in the first place coupled with a dip or movement from an elk that caused the miss?
I'd also mention that we've taken 8 bulls in the last 3 years with longbow/recurve, shots from 36yds to 13yds & no issues with those slow components. I can appreciate that past 40yds lots of crap can happen! (grin)

My dad had a bull jump the string at 35yds. He was leaning agianst his buddy who called the bull in. His buddy was looking almost right down the arrow, the shot was headed right toward the vitals. The bull dipped to run and the arrow caught the bull right in the spine. It dropped the bull paralyzing the back legs. I think any thing can happen.
