My son drew the archery buck tag. I have one question for someone that knows. Can anyone hunt this area for 3 point or better or do you have to have the buck tag to get access. Any other info would be great also. Thanks

Closed to hunting of deer besides special permit. Scout the fields and see where they are coming out of the thickets to feed. Set up a ground blind and wait.

Or spot from a boat the island and see if you can find a buck and spot and stalk it.

Thanks for the info.

For sure, glad to help.
Have you been able to locate the Maps and regs for the unit yet?

That's what I am working on today

That's a great tag for big bucks. Your son should do well down there. I drew it this year for anterless/muzzleloader. I know the area very well if you need some suggestions. Be very careful if you bring a boat in. There are some lower unit killers around the island.

It CAN be a great tag for big bucks...
I wouldn't have too high of expectations though... It's been a long time (5-6 years?) since I've seen or heard of a permit holder taking a good buck off of there. It's not an easy hunt although at first glance it may appear that way.... :twocents:

You won't have bucks running everywhere, the big ones dig in deep and that crap is thick. Anything but a sure thing.

A couple things about Whitcomb I'll just throw out there. Yes, it is kind of an island and most of is is fairly open with some farm ground that the deer like. One area is off limits while much of the brushy parts are very thick. The good news is that it's an early hunt and if you can hold out and not take advantage of legally killing a spike or forky, you have the rest of the general season to hunt for a real buck.
I recommend you looking hard at the regs and all the hunting dates that go on in there. Before you are allowed to chase bucks around, there will be a week of 10 archery guys in there after a doe. I don't think that fish and game really care about the deer there, I think its a way to push deer off of the island so that there are less road kills on HWY 14.
A youth archery hunter will probably need to be in a stand or to try and pattern them. I have poor results patterning any single mule buck especially after any amount of pressure. I don't remember if there is corn planted on there this year or if it's all alfalfa. My gut says you better expect corn which means they won't be leaving it.
It could be a great hunt....I don't mean to discourage. But....I will say I'm surprised how many people put in for it as well as how many spikes or forked horns people settle for....

Btw...
I did see one last night that I couldn't get a picture of but he had some real potential.
