Title: my new marlin 45-70
Post by: syoungs on June 14, 2014, 12:40:32 PM
Stopped by a local pawn shop looking for a new cordless tool setup, but happened to spot a marlin 1895gbl 45-70, with a vortex viper 1x4 scope sitting on it. I've been wanting a, new lever gun for a couple years now, but every 1895 45-70 I've looked at was chock full of tooling marks and rough edges, with cheap feeling stocks, or they were older guns with decent actions but beat to death.

This one was tight, good looking receiver, not a spot on it, honestly looks unfired, def not used much if at all.
The picture is kinda crappy, and does not do it justice, ill get more pics when I pick it up next week.

Nice looking gun!

You may want to look into the marlin owners forum about it.  There's a long thread there about the weak receiver and feed tube problems on the .45-70's since Remington took over Marlin (they call them Remlins).  I do know that if it has JM stamped into the side of the barrel, then it's an older one that was made by Marlin and not Remington and it should be fine.  The Remington ones sounded like they are finding cracking receivers that can't be seen without disassembly.  If there are no cracks seen in a thorough inspection, then it's probably going to be fine.

I found this after trading for the one I have, and I got spooked!  A check showed a JM stamp and an inspection showed good quality machining work.

Good Luck!

Its pre remlin, so I was willing to pay a bit of a premium. It was 1000 $ otd, but its got a brand new vortex viper sitting up top. I could have spent a little less, but being a pre remlin, and the optics made it worth while to me, plus its like brand new

That scope looks like it's gunna be pretty close to your eye.  You might see if you can shift it forward a bit.  Especially with 45/70...  :yike:  :chuckle:

Nice looking gun though!

Ya that! My scout scope on my guide gun is way further up. Pops right off for using the ghost ring sights.

Nice rifle!

I just picked up a minty mint 2007 (pre Remlin) 1895m in 450 Marlin Sunday afternoon.  Trying to figure out optics now.  I know it's not traditional, but a Burris Fastfire is looking like a good option.  Anyone out there run a red dot on their lever gun?

The scope may come off and go onto a ar honestly, its more of a tactical piece as is, maybe not though, ill move it forward as much as I can if I keep it on there.

Mine is mounted on the XS system scope mount. With quick detatch rings.
