So this is my first permit I've ever got and got lucky getting a cow tag up Taneum. I have never hunted the area but heard of monster bull elks. Does anyone have any advice or round about where I could possibly look for a cow. I get 5 days to hunt it but probably get only 2 or 3 days to do it. So any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
Shawn

There is lots of time to get out there and find a honey hole.

I'm in the same boat...
Good luck, and keep your eyes peeled for a "wanna start an elk camp" thread. Haha

Look up almost any thread lately about elk. They all say pretty much the same thing.
1. Get a map
2. Think like an elk
3. Boots on the ground
4. Steep n deep.

Yeah you won't get any help on hunt wa.

when is this permit? that is a pretty easy unit to scout out some cows in.....

Hunt the west-south west part of the unit, GET OFF the roads there has been to much traffic by then in the easy parts of the unit,
not a slam dunk tag ! scouting will help but the Elk get pushed around hard in the east 1/2 of the unit ,good map and some work you'll
kill a cow but dont expect it to stand along the road for you

The hunt dates are from Oct 29 - Nov 2. So not much time I might get 2 or 3 days out of that to hunt. But I'm getting maps going to do some scouting and a lot of walking.

Well, best be up there this summer/fall scouting..and then in the week or two before the tag scouting again. that way one can have them located and under observation and use the tag days to pick and fill the tag.

Hunt WA is great, and you will probably get quite a few PMs. I got a lot of help from great people when I drew a cow tag in 2011 for a different unit. I have never been in the Taneum, or I'd be one of the PMs.

I got some good info. I got help from my father uncle and brothers with the scouting so should be fun.

Google Earth and topos are your friend. Check out drainages with lots of cover and get the heck off the roads. Most "hunters" don't go more than a 1/4 mile in. Go in a mile or more. Scout, scout, scout. Be in shape. Elk are huge and you have to not only get them on the ground, but out afterwards. Best of luck.
