Title: Where can I find hardwoods for smoking?
Post by: Westside88 on June 19, 2014, 05:38:13 PM
I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a source for chunks/pieces of applewood, cherrywood etc for smoking. I know you can buy chips, but I'm looking for larger pieces for an outdoor pizza oven. I've seen pieces of applewood in eastern wa at some orchards, but I'm hoping there's somewhere on the west side.  While I'm asking about hardwoods, is wild cherry good for smoking? Thanks for any tips

While not local, Weber makes smoking woods in chunk form.  usually in 5# bags.  Some of the chunks in the last bag were fist sized.

Your local farmers and orchardists usually have bins of fruit woods for sale just for that.

May be more than want you are looking for. I tend to by rounds and splits in bulk.

Wiley's Cooking Woods I Portland. Recently sold details are pending.
Sam's NW BBQ (http://samsnwbbqco.com/) in Sherwood Oregon. Has just about everything and can get splits in bulk.

Ducks Landscaping in Woodinville for pellets. Knows his pellets well.

Depot Café in Everett has wood for sale occasionally. Usually in 4 x 4 x 4 pallets though.

My favorite vendor though is Fruita Wood Chunks (http://www.fruitawoodchunks.com/) out of Fruita Colorado. Shipping is free. Burt runs a good shop with quality wood.

Thanks everyone for all the good info. I did look on ebay, but was hoping to find a little larger pieces.  Thanks for the links Rider, I'll look into those. It might work out to get a bigger order like a pallet load. I appreciate all the tips

I buy alder chips in 25 lb sacks from a guy on the coast for about $20 plus shipping. If you want the name, I can go into my records and find it for you.
