In sxs check out gun digest and look for ones with choke tubes because of steel shot they have to be of fairly modern manufacture and in sxs's I prefer double triggers as there is nothing faster for barrel selection or reliabillity.  For my waterfowl steel shooter sxs I shoot a CZ Bobwhite and am very please with it.  Expect to pay a couple hundred off new for a used.

On O/U's you on your own all mine are 50+ years old I haven't look at a new one in about th at many years.

I've got a CZ that I put out to pasture in the safe until hunting season,CZ's are fine for hunting guns that get used for hunting,I would reccomend something more high end if regular clay busting is going to be a possibility. My shooting partner from the club had 2 CZ bobwhites, one in .28 gauge and one in .410,they both laid down and died at 7 and 9 thousand rounds fired. They are not gunsmith freindly either as they have oddball screws that there isn't a driver for.The smith my buddy took his guns to had to build a custom screwdriver to get into the action and the replacement parts required heavy fitting work.I have a woodcock CZ in .410,I turned it into a hunting only gun and bought a high end Winchester 101 3 gauge (20,28,.410) skeet set.If your buddy looks around he ought to be able to find a screamer deal on a used and non maintained browning citori for around 600,I used to see quite a few well used, non maintained 12 gauges in those at around that price range, they will however most likely not have screw in chokes.Lot's of used brownings around and the price point on them is substantially less than a Berreta. My other club buddy has over 250 thousand rounds through his Browning XS,it clips along like new,the man has a Kreighoff  K-80 and shoots the browning exclusively as he is one with that gun.I found my winchester and wasn't even really looking and it was a VERY good deal. The deals are out there you just have to look. The farther the lever is to the right  of center the BETTER!Look for a tight action with no side to side slop, and always remember nothing wears one out faster than slamming it shut and not greasing the hinge points! They are finely crafted tight tolerance weapons, close it gently and support it upon opening.

Wow, this is an old post. Side-by-side vs. Over and Under. A friend once told me, "If God had wanted us to shoot over and under He would have put our eyes one on top of the other."

Not sure I have a preference, but I can picture some gnarly oldtimer saying that.

That's cuz the old timer never shot an O/U. If side by's were so good someone would be shooting them in competition.

SxS's seem feel better in the field, carry better, faster to mount and quicker on the target much like a good saddle horse.  O/U seem to be able to do repetitive things well much like a draft horse.

I've only owned 8 or 9 O/U over the years and used them mainly for clay games and have sold off most of them as I've gotten older.  My field guns have almost always been SxS's.  With a SxS I can be on a bird much faster and can get away with much lighter loads, my favorite WILD pheasant load is an ounce of 6's at 1150fps.

Bernardelli 12ga all steel and wood 5 lbs. 15 oz. what a pleasure to hunt with. Not very pleasant on the skeet field with that load

Stoeger Uplander 12 ga side x side with 26 inch barrels.  They utilize Winchester/Mossberg chokes.  Check out the SASS website to learn how to smooth up the action and you are set.  For under $400 your friend will have a 6.5 lb upland gun just slip on a decelerator pad for the 3 inch mags for waterfowl.

False dichotomy

An over under IS a double barrel. Just sayin'  :)
