So I bought a vortex crossfire 2 scope and I have had nothing but problems with getting it zeroed on a vanguard 308. I have tried different brands of bases and rings and the lowest the scope will go is still over 2ft at 100 yrds. I have been emailing back and forth with someone at vortex and he insists it's a problem with the bases or rings. I have told him all of the different combinations I have tried and that there was no change. Also I have put 3 other scopes on this rifle and none of them had this problem (leupold, vortex diamondback , and weaver). I know I didn't over tighten the rings or bases.
The vortex guy said I should try a 20 MOA rail and that should fix the problem. Does anyone have any experience with these? He said if the rail does not work to send it in and they will take a look.
It's been frustrating because of the money already spent and after doing a little research, these rails are $70-200

When you initially bore site the scope what method do you use? Also does your set up include shims ?

I just tried a rough bore sight by placing the gun in a vice and removing the bolt. I place a orange dot on the wall and align the bore on the dot. I have done this with all of my rifles and it has always worked. The problem this time around was I could not bring the scope down to meet the dot. I was still 10in or so high. I figured it would still take it to the range and see where it meet the paper and it was way high. As far as shims go, I have not tried it because of the shims would have to be very thick to make any difference. It's almost like I need a med rear ring and a low front ring.
I also had the range master try to bore site it with his tools and he was unable to come close

Burris Signature Rings would be a good solution. You can use different inserts inside the ring to adjust the point of impact.You can use the inserts to move your POI by as much as 20 MOA. An added bonus is that they protect your scope from getting ring marks.

If you tried several other scopes,..... bases etc, and some of them worked, see your post, the problem is with the Vortex scope you are trying. either send it back for repair, throw it away and use the Leupold, or figure out what you are doing wrong.

Thanks carl. More and more I think its the scope and not the bases and rings. Like I said the other 3 scopes I mounted on the gun zeroed without any issues even the other vortex. The vortex guy I have been working with had me second guessing myself and my gut feeling

Easy way to tell if its the scope stick it on another rifle.

Well I just tried the scope on my sons ruger american. It just barley works. With the scope elevation adjustment maxed all the way down I can get it zeroed. Maybe I will give the 20moa rail a try. Kinda sounds like the vortex guy was right. I just have a real hard time thinking there is that much difference in elevation between the holes on the vanguard.

Try off set rings and shims.

Also possibly a bent tube?

I can't see how the tube would have gotten bent unless it came from the factory that way. Its just sat in the safe. I guess its always a possibility.
I am not sure what off set rings are. Can you elaborate?

Sounds to me like a bad scope, if you are almost to end of the adjustments on the second rifle. Scopes can be bad from the factory, and it sounds like yours is. I'd send it back to Vortex, they should make it right.

How tall are your rings? If the rings are too tall you may need to use up all of the elevation adjustment together it zeroed at close range. I've had this problem when mounting scopes on ARs.

Maybe I will give the 20moa rail a try.
That will make it hit even higher.

The only scope I ever had to shim was on a custom 10-22, and I think it was the way that the barrel block and screws pulled the barrel down enough that it shot 2 feet low at 100 yards. I set the scope elevation knob in the center, and 3 layers of electrical tape brought it up to where I could fine tune it with the adjustment knob. It really doesn't take much.
I agree that if other scopes are OK, and the Vortex isn't, it must be the scope. I would send it back with a note telling what the problem is, and they will fix it. You must have my luck--if 1 in 1000 items are bad, I'll get the bad one... :chuckle:

I don't understand some of the comments on here, He said he tried other scopes and they zeroed in just fine, then the problem is with the scope , not the mounts or the rifle. Some times a scope is bad from the factory, it doesn't matter what brand, any can and do have problems once in awhile. Send the scope in with a description of the problem and get it fixed.
