Title: Trail cam question
Post by: HntnFsh on July 11, 2014, 07:11:53 AM
I'm going to buy 2 or 3 cams here pretty quick so I can get them set up for my Dayton muzzy hunt. Will be headed over the week after next to put them up. Ive read the post by Billythekidrock about cams. Awesome write up.

I was thinking about cams in the under a $100 range plus accessories like SD cards, locks, boxes etc. wondering what you guys suggest for cameras. Want something that will take decent pics. Easy to operate. Cheaper the better. Even though cheaper isnt usually better. I know the old saying. You get what you pay for.

If you have any links to the cams I would appreciate that too.

 Thanks,
HntnFsh

I can't say good enough about the basic or even fancy Bushnell Trophy cam. If you look around sometimes you can find some very good deals....I picked up my last one at Cabellas for $125. Biggest draw for me even if you do spend a little more than 100 is the size is very compact, easy to use, and they simply go a long long time on 8 AA batteries. I know you can spend less but if you are changing out much more expensize C's then really you aren't saving much. Amazon, Cabelas, Bass Pro...just poke around and look for good deals.

Natchez Shooter Supply sells demo's and refurb's. That's where I'd be looking.  All of my pictures come from Demo model Bushnell Trophy cam's. I'd only buy cameras that run on a bunch of AA batteries. It seems like the ones using D's or C's go through them quickly.

That's not the camera I have but it's worth a look. There's a bunch more Bushnell's listed there too.

I'd get SD cards from Amazon. Something like this would be a good one:

I made the plunge into trail cams this year. Two cheap Brownings and a Primos. Primos makes better day images but the Browning rules the nights. The Brownings made it 3,000-5,000 photos on 8x AA batteries and died. The Primos 35 has shot about 15,000 photos and used 50% of 4x D batteries.

Get black python cable locks at Amazon for $11 ea. I bought bear boxes and pad locks for an additional $35-40 for each can after being paranoid from so many theft stories here over the years. But for only spending $50-75 on the cam in the first place this seems like silly economics. Buy the cable lock, maybe a padlock too and call it good for cheap cams.  :twocents:

If you want a quality trail camera stick with the Bushnell Trophy camera, I leave mine out year round in the most extreme weather conditions,
like others have said you get what you paid for, the battery's  last a long time depending how its set up, oh another plus with these cameras there easy to operate, I started out with two  50.00 Tasco camera they both were junk in less than a year, I use them now as dummy security cameras

Yes, takes eight AA's.  My new favorite camera. I really like the extra wide format photos. Too bad they don't make them anymore.  :bash:

I run both bushnell and moultrie and primo's

I put the Bushnell's in spots where a camera is more likely to get stolen,  do me a favor if they all got stolen.

The primo's don't deserve new batteries - I'll use them as decoys or leave em in the truck.

I hide the multries very well and take extra precautions they don't get stolen, and don't use them in areas with people around.

Spypoint G4 from Gander Mountain web site for $89. Plus you can Google "Gander Mountain coupon" and get one for an additional $10-20 off. Free shipping and no tax. Takes decent pics and this is the second year for the batteries.

Great, I'm sure you'll be happy with them. They're very simple to use and take great pictures, day and night. No issues whatsoever.

Here are a few recent pictures I got with mine:
