Title: benchmark barrels review
Post by: robertsjd on July 16, 2014, 08:42:06 PM
i totally forgot to do this months back . today i was cleaning my rifle and just day dreaming for bear season to open up when i looked at my muzzle break and thought shoot i still need to do a review on the folks over at benchmark for those of you hunt wa members like myself that do extensive research prior to doing something for anything!
ill start off with what i had them do

muzzle break
jewel trigger install
bolt knob
minor filing for smooth bolt movement

now for the review part i cannot express my happiness with the end result of my rifle . it took a little over 2 months to get the rifle back but it was spring time and I'm sure a lot of people  had the same idea as me to get some rifle work done during the off season . so it was worth the wait . but the muzzle break is absolutely night and day difference i shoot a Remington 700 7MM rem mag . and i can honestly say it feels like that of a 243 its just insane. the trigger compared to my stock trigger is just amazing feels so crisp and smooth i love it . the bolt knob something so simple but also fell in love with it its great. and the minor tweaks they made on the bolt i can't say enough about these fells over there they did down right awesome work and i recommend them to anyone for any sorts of work you wish to have done these guys have some work to be proud of and to stand behind cheers fellas and a happy 2014 hunting season to all of you! heres a few pics just for fun

I had them to some work to my 300 weatherby this past winter, basically a full accurizing and a new barrel. I absolutely love the work they did, the barrel is sweet, new brake is awesome, and the rifle is shooter a whole lot better than it was. I spent a lot of money which I am ok with, I'm a firm believer of you get what you pay for, but I'm not sure I'll take another rifle there again. Not that I'm unhappy in any way, its just a long drive for me. When I dropped the gun off I was really amazed that I was basically dropping it off at a dairy farm, which is fine with my, I grew up with a small business in the backyard. When I picked the rifle up it was not the same guy who I talked to when I dropped it off, this guy was very short with me, really didn't even tell me what I was getting. When I left it there I was given a rough estimate on cost, as they weren't too sure on how much they could do to accurize the weatherby action, how much work inletting the stock would be... etc. but when I came to pick it up I was given a price and walked out the door with my much sexier looking (and much better shooting) rifle, no receipt, no explanation of what I got or what they did... it just seemed weird. Again, not unhappy at all, just not sure I'd do it again. If they were a couple hours closer, with their great reputation I'd definitely do it again.

Another thing that kind of bugs me. My muzzle brake is the same one that's pictured above (I don't know the brand, no one told me and when I dropped it off I told them put what ever they'd put on their own rifle). However its not perfectly lined up, if you look at the top flute on the barrel, the brake is cocked to one side slightly. Obviously not going to affect anything, just something I always look at when holding it.

The brake was probably correctly lined up with the BORE, which does not necessarily line up with the outside of the barrel.  :twocents:

That break is a Defensive Edge .750 break  I believe.

I'll never complain about the quality of Benchmark's work.

I've had my issues with them, but never anything that wasn't typical of most smiths. The usual delays and communication gaps that go along with custom work are what I've experienced. Their barrels sure do shoot though!

My brother got a break put on like yours and it was a tad off. He's cool with it, but my ocd caught it instantly.  He's happy though so that's all that matters.

I would hope the guys working on guns or building guns would be OCD as well, for the money I wouldn't want anything looking out of place...

I have handled 4 guns they have built and 2 guns they put breaks on and I haven't seen anything negative standout. Ill have to look them over more thorough now.
