Title: Westport and the BAR
Post by: BowForElk on July 18, 2014, 07:44:18 AM
SO whats the deal fellas. Are all the fish being caught past the bar or what? My dad has a 19' Wellcraft but he doesn't want to cross the bar in it but I want to slay some fish!!!!

Ive only fished out of westport on a charter so as far as in shore fishing or anything I'm clueless. He seems to think that we won't catch any fish unless we cross over (which could be true, he's usually right  :chuckle:)

Were trying to go fishing this weekend just nailing down a place to go with fish so were not just burning fuel.

Best fishing is "over" the bar. Up North by casino and straight out about 8-10 miles. Although this weekend may be a little sporty. If your not comfortable with a bar crossing avoid max ebb tides and get a buddy boat.

I haven't heard if the fish are in there yet but maybe try Willapa Bay it's just down the road a piece and no BAR to cross there.

Willapa is hit or miss. when the fish are in, it's a good fishery. The Kings average around 20 pounds. they do get a lot bigger. You will be fishing in shallow water. herring - fishflash- cannon ball lead. tides are really important. it should be prime time in a few weeks. you will get some wind chop, but you would be fine in your boat.

Why wouldn't your dad cross the bar in a 19' boat? Hell I fished the bar in a 15'er for over 25 years., and I mean RIGHT ON THE BAR. Now I have a 19' Bellboy. Unless your dad doesn't have that much time on the water, then I understand.

He has just never done it. Has tons of time in a boat ( was a marine technician) If we had a boat to follow out the first time it'd be way different but I think the uncertainty and possibility of a water related castasrophe is whats stopping him.

So maybe one of these weeks we can hook up with one you  scalawags and go sail the seven seas for the first time!!!  :chuckle:

Respect the bar, it can bite you bad. No fish is worth your life.

Not to flip your thread upside down but they can have that place  :chuckle: went down there commercial crabbing once ..layed out around 30 pots ...came back the next morning and pulled up on the 1st pot and as the line came tight in the boom the boat about went over on its side ...scared the living ------ out of us ..luckily we were paying attention and unhooked the rope from the wheel before it was to late and luckily we had all bait containers tied off or we would have flipped  :yike: long story short we lost all the pots to being sanded in ...never went back since  :bdid:

This is probably one of the most useful articles to read when it comes to crossing the bar at WP. This guy has some great reads on NW fishing.
