I have just started the last couple years messing around with trailcameras in my Elk hunting areas. It is really cool to see all the pics, but the giant craters left by the bait and concentrated elk sign concern me.Anyone that would happen to hike around these areas would be hunting there as well.I have hunted many of these areas for over 30 years with great success and little or no hunting pressure. Also it takes the mystery out of what might be out there .The pictures are awesome but I don't think its worth it ,anybody else feel this way, thoughts?

You don't have to use bait. Just watch to see what's wandering the area.

I never use bait and have no problems getting pictures of all types of critters. I place my cams in areas where critters are not people. Over the past couple of years I have only got a couple pictures of people.

I agree with you guys, never should have put down bait. I used Black Magic Deer Cocaine the bags said it becomes habit forming.Man is that an understatement every site I dumped a bag last year looks likes an atomic bomb went off.The elk were digging it further this year before baiting. :bdid:

I do agree it does take the mystery out of it. I have had the same thoughts. But it's so much fun getting the pictures I can't resist putting out a few cameras. You still have the mystery of not knowing exactly what you're going to get with the camera. Like the occasional bear, cougar, or bobcat when all I'm expecting is deer or elk. This year I have cameras out in two locations where I won't even be hunting, at least not this year.
I would suggest going without bait, if that will make you feel better about it. You won't get as many pictures but at least they will be more natural.

I drew a bull permit in my favorite area and am also trying to decide right now if I should put cameras etc out. Nobody would notice my spot but with a block & camera it would spark someones interest immediately. I really want to see this year bad but am worried about give away. I'm leaning towards not.

I've never had a person on cam in 4 years of using them. As far as bait sites being a giveaway, I always have my salt block and cam packed out before hunting season so it shouldn't really be a problem.
