Title: lowrance hdi or in general ?
Post by: flinger on July 19, 2014, 03:00:20 PM
So just a quick question for anyone who might know
When fishing in the sound generally trolling downriggers my Lowrance mark 4 hdi has settings for 200 hrtz and 83 hrtz
I am just not sure witch is the better of the two to fish at salmon depths.
Any advice is appreciated
       Thanks

"Salmon depths" is super vague :chuckle:

I would guess generally 80 to 150 ft.

I would use the 83 hz. The two settings are a different wideness of a cone beam shooting down. The 83 hz is a wider beam meaning it will probably show more fish, and give you more feedback of the depths the fish are running. The 200 hz is going to show you what is directly below you. The 200 hz would also be a better setting for going deeper. Does that make sense or should I restate that?

so it doesn't really have an effect on detecting fish echos it is more for water space that is viewable?

Kind of. The 200 hz will probably show up as a smaller arch or dot or whatever and likely to have a higher resolution (which is a good thing). So I guess it could be a personal preference too. The 83 hz setting is going to show a larger area of water, which is probably what you will want because it will show you what depths more fish are at.

cool
think I got an idea of how they work
probably make a couple passes on a plotted course and see which seems to perform better
it's a brand new unit so a bit of experimenting with the settings is needed
Now if I can just get the fish to stay in one spot I will be golden :chuckle:

Thats one reason I like my Humminbird because I can set it to show both frequencies on the same screen and with the fish ID it will show me the ones it thinks are fish in either of the two cones based on the color of the little fish picture.

On the Lowrance, you should be able to do a split screen, one for each frequency, you can then compare what you are seeing at each frequency, and whether or not you believe it....   :chuckle:

I usually run split screens.  They seem to show different things depending on depth and what I'm trying to look at.

sounds more like the split screen option for preference test

I think it matters what transponder you are running. I just got the Lawrance and it had 2 choices that was offered. So Im under the impression you make the setting based on that.  :dunno:
