Title: Axle flip on travel trailer
Post by: ffbowhunter on July 20, 2014, 12:10:12 PM: So I recently bought a 24ft travel trailer. We need more ground clearance for where we will be setting up elk camp. Does anyone have any experience with this or know somewhere near port orchard that could do this?

Any good welder should be able to weld the new pad on top of the axle for you, then place the springs on top of the new pads and secure with new u bolts. Don't just rotate the axle to get the existing perches on top, because the axles have a camber in them that flattens out when the trailer is loaded. If you rotate the axle, the camber will be upside down and you'll have problems.

Post by: SniperDanWA on July 31, 2014, 07:56:00 PM: I did my 23' trailer two years ago. I went to Six Robles (sp) in Seattle to get the axle pads and new u bolts. I just raised the entire trailer off the ground with jacks. Used my air tools to drop the nuts off. Marked and cut the brake wires. Rolled the axles out. Welded the new pads opposite the old ones (which keeps the camber right). Rolled the axles back under the trailer. Installed new u bolts. Reconnected the wires. I was done in 4 hours from start to finish. Gained near 6" in lift. Perfect for the Suburban I have. It was set for a 2WD suburban before. Maybe put $50 in parts. I had all the tools and a level driveway to do it.

SniperDanWA gave a pretty good rundown on doing it. Have a welding shop do the welding if you're not equipped.

Don't try to burn off the old mounts, it could weaken the axle and it's too cheap to get new ones.

my 23ft komfort came new with plenty of height..

Post by: netcoyote on August 03, 2014, 08:32:14 AM: Did a spring over on my '96 Mallard about 9 years ago. Good luck trying to find someone to do it. No shops wanted to mess with it. Turns out that it wasn't that hard to do with the Dexter parts. I added the articulated spring link which seemed to reduce the harshness of the spring action. No welding required if you use the Dexter parts. Added about 5" of critical ground clearance. If anyone needs more info on this project, just shoot me a message and I'll be glad to help where I can.
