Title: Margaret bulls
Post by: tluns on July 22, 2014, 03:47:24 PM
Drew a muzzleloader bull tag for the Margaret this year. Never hunted that unit. Who wants to be the first to send me a map of their honey-hole? Actually was wondering if there is any good free camping that is still close to the Weyerhouser accesses?

Not sure about free camping almost everything is posted the little campground at kid valley is not to bad we stayed there last year for cow hunt up there.

I archery cow hunted it last year and saw quiet a few bulls nothing huge.  Don't even bother with the noble tree farm land they wont let you hunt.  My neighbor worked for them and I still couldn't get access.  I would assume like for us the gates will be locked.  easy roads to hike and bike if you put the effort in.  I also saw plenty of bulls within a quarter mile of the highway up on steep hillsides and drainages that ran under highway.  The herds seem to use the underpass areas as highways.  I would try to stay up as high as possible close to the timber farm.  Also saw lots of elk on the east side of the unit and easy hiking trail on the boundary to hike in.  That side is more open which would be nice for spot and stalk.  You could camp for free on the east side as well forest service land.

Went a little all over there hope something in there helps you.

There is a square of state DNR land by the sediment damn and if weyco has the gate open it is only 20 mins from camp till hunting spots. I would give you direction on Bulls but I was hunting cows and never saw any big boys. Good Luck!!!

P.S Get the map from the gas station in town

Thanks, I'll check that out. I have hunted the Winston out of Kid Valley a couple times. I'm just not big on camping in a campground. According to Weyerhouser the 3100 access will be open. That appears on the map to be close (4-5 miles) to some NF - monument areas.

Mark smith runs Eco-park and is alway happy to help point you in the right direction. He knows a crap ton about the elk out there.. I've noticed it's getting more and more crowded out there anymore. I don't even bother heading over anymore. Always just so many people! Good luck on your tag dude and at least stop in and chat with Mark he's a really nice guy!

If you are planning on hunting the weyco tree farm you're going to have to buy the permit if you are hunting that side. I've heard there is good hunting in the FS side but it's all walk in there. Unfortunately the quality of bulls have gone downhill. That being said I've still seen some big boys up there. A lot of them will hang out below elk rock, but that is loowit and some of it is no access. There can be a few nice ones on the toutle river side of spirit lake highway , but you have to be clear on your boundary because the loowit unit is right there also. I would stick to the weyco side but only because I know it well. I'm also a wanderer so I would also check out the east side of the unit.
