Title: Nisqually river
Post by: Andrew8235 on July 30, 2014, 10:31:59 AM
Hey guys, I've never fished the nisqually before but after seeing the reports on the run's this year i have to get out there. The dilemma i have is i have NO idea where to fish this river. I'm not expecting anyone to reveal their honey hole or anything crazy but i am looking for a place where i can fish the nisqually. Any insight here would be helpful, thanks Hunt-Wa

Are you military Andrew? If so, you can fish the north side below mounts rd. Walk the 4x4 road down river a ways and get away from most everyone. There's some good bobber/egg water down there. We use to do really good there.

There is a trail at the end of the I5 bridge that will take you to the river and some fishing spots.

You dont need to be DOD to fish mounts road, you just have to register with Range Control to use the military base legally.

Above the Mounts road bridge you will see a sign for public fishing, y=take the left turn and follow it to the end. Its called The Handicap Hole. WDFW propeerty and a cement slab for wheelchair access, but there is plenty of access above and below it to.

Good Luck and tight lines  :hello:

Otherwise known as Old Pacific Hwy. It is the exit off of I 5 that goes to the golf course or the "town" of Nisqually.

There is also the Tank Crossing south of Yelm by the Casino.

Not sure if there is access or not by the hatchery on JBLM, I don't remember, but I do know if you are on base, you can fish the base side of the Tank Crossing and it will be less crowded, but I would hit it later in the season.

not a whole lot of access.  pressure has been absolutely insane the last couple years, and i expect it to get worse with the puyallup type seaons now(i think the puyallup going to selected days has been the biggest factor in the nisquick getting more crowded).

the only place you can expect to find some uncrowded water from the bank is going to be from fort lewis property, and you gotta do some walking.  there should be some fish up by the tank crossing, but the majority will be in the lower river(the hatchery is only a little ways above the campground)

kinda sucks that most of the public access has been lost, no more parking on the thurston county side of old pacific highway(mounts road is on the west side of I5), and you can't drive upriver from the WDFW access without paying the campground's extortion fee any more.

I have fished it in a boat. We did really well. You will need a pump if you go in a boat, a prop wont work. We entered from the salt and went up river.

Yep, and thats why you will rarely see me at a rivers edge any more fishing  :bash:

I do not do well combat fishing, so I will stay in my boat  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

not true, you can go up from the mouth with a prop if you're careful.  of course, this is with a little aluminum fishing boat, no way i'd be going up there in a big fiberglass bay type boat.

i prefer to launch at the fort lewis access and run down river(i have a jet), that is, if the knuckleheads down there don't all park along the river and block me from going in/out(they have a little "designated boat launch" but it's useless unless you're launching a rubber raft, and odds are some cracker will be sitting in lawn chair there anyway)
