You dont need to be DOD to fish mounts road, you just have to register with Range Control to use the military base legally.
Above the Mounts road bridge you will see a sign for public fishing, y=take the left turn and follow it to the end. Its called The Handicap Hole. WDFW propeerty and a cement slab for wheelchair access, but there is plenty of access above and below it to.

Not sure if there is access or not by the hatchery on JBLM, I don't remember, but I do know if you are on base, you can fish the base side of the Tank Crossing and it will be less crowded, but I would hit it later in the season.

not a whole lot of access. pressure has been absolutely insane the last couple years, and i expect it to get worse with the puyallup type seaons now(i think the puyallup going to selected days has been the biggest factor in the nisquick getting more crowded).

Yep, and thats why you will rarely see me at a rivers edge any more fishing :bash:

We entered from the salt and went up river.not true, you can go up from the mouth with a prop if you're careful. of course, this is with a little aluminum fishing boat, no way i'd be going up there in a big fiberglass bay type boat.
i prefer to launch at the fort lewis access and run down river(i have a jet), that is, if the knuckleheads down there don't all park along the river and block me from going in/out(they have a little "designated boat launch" but it's useless unless you're launching a rubber raft, and odds are some cracker will be sitting in lawn chair there anyway)
