Subject: Please reject the HSUS petition that threatens hunting on public lands!
Secretary Sally Jewell
Department of the Interior
1849 C Street, N.W.
Washington DC 20240
Dear Secretary Jewell,
I am writing in objection of the petition presented by the Humane Society of the United States and various other organizations. They state that traditional lead hunting ammunition is a threat to wildlife populations and humans. That is absolutely not true.
I have not seen or heard of any sound, scientific evidence demonstrating a negative impact on the wildlife population caused by the use of traditional ammunition. There simply is no justification for restricting or banning its use. The 50-page petition fails to make the case that traditional ammunition is a threat to wildlife, and there is no evidence that consuming game taken with traditional ammunition poses a human health risk.
I strongly reject this scientifically baseless petition to ban traditional ammunition. Requiring the use of alternative, non-lead ammunition is nothing more than a back-door way to ban hunting by raising the price of participating in an American sporting tradition.
Hunters are the original conservationists. For more than 80 years, an 11 percent excise tax that manufacturers collect and pay on ammunition sales has supported conservation and habitat preservation efforts. These taxes are a primary source of wildlife conservation funding. Banning traditional ammunition will harm the very animals HSUS claims to care about.
Respectfully submitted,
