Been looking into buying a diesel. I've been looking at 06-07 5.9 cummins. Looking for one with less than 100k miles but they're a little more spending than I'm wanting to pay. I know the 7.3 is an awesome motor but I want a newer truck. Seen enough issues with the 6.0s and don't want one of those. Not a fan of Chevys and so I'm looking at the 6.4s. Love the look of the exterior and interior. But of course the mpg scares me. From what I've heard 12mpg is pretty well the stock average for them. So my question is. Is there anyone here that's done the dpf, egr, and any other deletes and upgrades on here? And what difference in mpg did you see?

I am averaging 16 with a 6 inch lift and 37s I love mine but do your research...

The 6.4L is a modified 6.0L. Same issues.
I'm surrounded by them day in and day out.

Pay the extra for the Cummins.

I can confidently tell you, with 10 years of Dodge experience and 2 years now of Ford experience, that these Ford diesels don't even come close to holding a candle to the quality of the Cummins. They're not even in the same ball park.

Jackelope, what do you think about the 6.7L ford engines? I have a 2012 and so far it has been a strong motor.

 that quote just made my day! Thanks jackalope! Just wish I'd have known that 6 years ago.

Those 6.0s are bad news...

6.7 is solid. I replaced one this month but it was a fluke. We sent it back to Ford for further investigation.

Avoid the 6.4. Rocker arms usually fail around 100k mark and the values will most likely be shot around 200k because international cut corners when making the engine. They didn't even put in bronze guides. Plus having work done on a 6.4 is very pricey.

I urge you to give the GM a try. I have an 08 with the LMM motor and its a dream. The Duramax hasnt changed much through the years and is backed by the Allison tranny. Go test drive one and see the difference in ride quality. Not trying to start a debate.

:yeah: Yup, dont buy until you at least go give a GM a test drive. They seem pretty solid with the allison tranny, and the "Durimax" engine. Isuzu helped GM put the motor together. I like Ford pickups, and went V-10 to avoid the diesel nightmare post 7.3.

Take a look at the 6.7 cummins. I think the aftermarket has pretty much figured out the emissions issues they had when they first came out.
