Title: Bears out in the rain ?
Post by: Carl on August 10, 2014, 10:47:38 PM
I hope this doesn't sound too stupid, but I'm trying to get my son out bear hunting one more time before he goes back to college and I'm wondering if bears are effected by the rain forecasted for this week. In other words, are they still out and about on rainy days?

Thanks,
Carl

I personally don't see them on rainy days (rain all day). I do see them during off and on showers. I did last Saturday.

Over the past couple years I have had about 30 bear sightings while out hunting, not a single one (one in late fall out in a light mist) was out in the rain.  I have also been out on my share of rainy days.   :twocents:

West side is completly different than eastside...I have chased alot of bears over the years and rain does effect them...if its light ot spotty than  its no biggie, but a front with constant rain all day I will hardly ever see a bear out.

Watched my father shoot a 280 lb boar in the pouring down rain, with a 270. A bear doesn't know when to stop eating. I'd recommend bringing a covered blind and setting up from across a heavily berried or clear cut canyon and be very patient. Most hunters don't see bear in the rain because the flat out don't hunt in the rain. MADE OUT OF SUGAR!!!! Haha lol, Good luck to you my friend. :hello:

Its been my experience that bear could care less if its raining or not.  Wind is usually more of a factor.  No animal likes a high wind.   It takes out a lot of their senses

Ive spent more than my fair share of miserable cow piss days out in the sticks, and have yet to see bear OUT IN THE OPEN. Under tree top cover yes I have. Maybe holds with Boneaddicts thoughts on high, breezy shear winds, whiich normally acomponany goose drowning rain. Just about all mybearswere killed on fair days.

We bumped what we assume were two bear in the rain yesterday.  If visibility had been more than about 30 feet and I hadn't fallen down when I did we might have been able to say for sure :chuckle:  Felt like I was wearing ice skates crossing the berry field on the steep slope.  Man!  It was a horrible day to try and hunt bear in the high country yesterday.  We did hear another animal that sounded like it was tearing apart some logs below us.  Assuming that was a bear too.

Too bad it wasn't grouse season :(  I haven't seen that many blue grouse in the past three years combined!  They were everywhere we went.

I generally have the best luck when hunting the first sunny day after a period of rain.  But we have found success in just about all weather conditions.  However, sunny skies and wet ground seem the perfect mix of conditions for high country bear hunting.

Rad sounds like your day was like mine. Walking across a very steep berry field and fell. Viz was less than 50 yards. Then later walking across a log it snapped and I fell 10ft into a pond my rifle made it out ok  :chuckle: me not so much. Upon that fall I heard a animal I'm assuming a bear, wasn't loud enough to be a elk, took off through the blueberry bushes.
