So I have been through the carb several times, new fuel line, new filter, new 3 gallon tank, new connectors. Clean as whistle inside - here is the problem- fires right up and prrs great, then after getting warm it dies a quick death and won't start till about 15 minutes - cools down. Pees good with a lot of pressure.... Could there be a thermostat somewhere that I am missing? I checked on the Yamaha schematic and couldn't find one listed anywhere, but seems like that could be the issue???? Almost an boat anchor soon............... If anyone has thoughts I'd love to hear them, as my trolling season is going to be shot here soon... Two trips blown out due to the kicker acting up... Trying to get it cured before this weekend activities schedules for Sekui..

Does it die after running at idle for 15 minutes? I know with mine if I'm idling for long periods of time and I shut it down I have to pull the spark plug and clean it to get it to fire back up.
-
Before it becomes an anchor, I'd like the chance to buy it.
-
Make me a reasonable decent - trade in equivalent offer and you can fix it and have a 2009 Yamaha T-8 that - maybe it is something minor... They are running new at 3K... :yike I'd take a offer as I got to get this one running perfectly by Friday or buying a new one.... As I run every weekend and must have something worry free as my mechanical skills aren't at shop level for sure...... And without a kicker I am toast on troll as my big motor cannot get low enough rpm's...

Does the oil light flash at all/ever?
Sounds like its heating up and stalling due to ring/piston expansion. Like its getting way to hot.
Then once it cools its runs again as the piston/rings have contracted.
Have you done pressure test on the cylinders?

It should have a Tstat.
Remove the Tstat. Put in a pan of water of the stove with a thermometer and see what the temp is when it opens. May not be the problem but at least you can rule it out that way.

Something is plugging the idle circuit in the carb. You may think its clean, but its not. It will run when cold as it is on the high idle circuit (kind of an automatic choke), which is injecting more fuel into the motor. As soon as it kicks itself off, it will die. Let it cool down for a few mins and it will start back up with the high idle again. Options are try to reclean it again or buy a new carb. New carb is still cheaper than a new motor. Good luck.

Hmmmm. Sounds like you know these engines.
My T8 trolls great but when I rev it up its wants to die. Ive cleaned it a couple times.

I would have already had it in the shop with a certified Yami mech. That's how I get mine to run right. :chuckle:
-
Might be a coil breaking down and losing spark and once it cools down the winding comes back together and has spark. See it all the time with small engines or maybe a vent problem.

Check your fuel pump.
I spent 3 months chasing the same symptoms on my kicker this spring. Changed fuel lines, cleaned the carb multiple times, changed primer bulb, rebuilt the fuel pump, new plugs and wires. Finally took it to a shop, they cleaned the carb 3 times and even bored out the main jet because the only thing they could come up with was lack of fuel. Nothing worked. I finally decided a brand new fuel pump was the cure.....it was. I'm not sure why the rebuild kit didn't cure the problem but it didn't. Now my kicker doesnt idle quite as low as it use to due to a bigger main jet. :bash:

Yep that was a part I put in a few week ago a new fuel pump...

Wierd! Cause there aint much to the fuel pump. Its an easy no brainer rebuild.

I fought my kicker this spring for a few hours only to realize that the choke linkage was disconnected and it was flooding itself after it warmed up. Just giving you something simple to look for. :dunno:

Appreciate all the feedback for sure. Got several ideas to look at and discussed with several techs at different dealers... The ones that nailed it was --- our very own CP and Robodad...    They both stated - check the thermostat! I went ahead and bought a new one, and took everything apart and guess what it was in the stuck open position... Pulled it out threw in a new one, put it back together. Ran it for one hour without fail... Awesome, cost me $40 bucks for the part, $7 for the gasket and whole lot of head ache trying to find the solution, but it is running again, prrrrrring just fine and nice slow idle.. Thanks guys...
Sure beats $350 for a new carb and 3k for a new motor... Ummmmm, motor not for sale anymore... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
So check list went like this, new filter, new fuel pump, new fuel hoses, new 3 gallon single tank for fuel, carb cleaned three times, and new hose connectors... Hopefully she'll be good for another 1500hrs....

My first thought.

Glad you figured it out. Went through a similar bout with my T8 a couple years ago. Not thermostat related, but still irritating. Now it purrs like a kitten.

So I guess its okay if I tell you they are biting we had 6 big kinge and a lot of silvers. A buddy called he had 1200 tuna yesterday and his brother 800 straight out 60 miles commercial with bait. But said it was real sloppy .
