Title: Owens Meats - No longer Processing Game
Post by: OUT4DUX on August 18, 2014, 08:17:06 AM
Was out doing a little scouting in GMU 340 yesterday. On the way back we stopped by Owens for some jerky and found out that they will no longer be processing any game. This is brand new for this year. Hate to see anyone else get caught by surprise on this, especially with game in hand.

Anyone have some recommendations on another spot in the area. Early season doesn't always make going 4hrs away a good option.

I was there yesterday, too... They told us that they have someone lined up locally that will be able to do processing and cold storage.

Check out Stang's meat cooler thread? He said he will hang meat and kegs with taps.

They called me last week, said they were losing money having their guys butcher wild game vs farm raised which bring higher prices. Sucks but can't fault a business for making money. He said the same thing to me that someone would be setting up shop in their seperate building to cut wild game.

I have to wonder whether the fact that they were raked over the coals on HuntWA by a number of folks for their game processing tactics may have played a role in their decision to stop processing game.  Seems like more and more processors are getting out of game processing and sticking with the consumer basics.

Any info on who will be available for hanging and processing in the Cle Elum or Ellensburg area would be helpful.

Hello fellow Hunt Washington members.  We would like to inform you and clear up any misinformation about us, regarding our game cutting..... We have decided that because our Retail business has been growing at such a huge pace, we can no longer split up our crew for the 3-4 month game season and still provide the service that our retail customers have come to expect. It has been a very hard decision to make, but we have come to the conclusion that we just can not do it all any more.  We want to thank all of our customers that have brought us their game throughout the years and apologize for any inconvenience that this will cause.

To address whether our decision was made because we have been "raked over the coals"  by guys on this site has absolutely nothing to do with our decision.  For the few customers over the years that have been disappointed by our service, there are thousands that have been very happy and appreciative of the quality and care we have taken with their game.

Again we would like to thank all of you for your patronage through the years.....

Sincerely, Don and Doug Owens

Thanks Don, at least it's not a total closure to the business. Do you have any contact info of who might be processing in cle elum?

Thank you Owens brothers and staff for always being there for us when we needed a deer or elk cut up. We could always count on you when bringing in a animal to butcher, ( sundays, anytime of day or night) and you were always a phone call away to help out. Thanks again, and i hope you guys get to spend more time in the woods

Yeah it was really assume when I waited four months on a deer once that I told them to pepperoni up , the guy told me he was afraid to call me WTF ! I told him what I wanted , but apparently that's what happens I took a deer to tnt  once totally boned out same day as kill on ice .... wanted all pepperoni they never called me .... I got busy and didn't even think about it for like six months so I figured screw them I wont be going back . Nile valley meats has done a fine job for me .

Since there have been quite a few dropping wild game processing in the last few years maybe we should get together a list of those that still do somewhere on the site? :dunno:
