Post by: MountainWalk on August 21, 2014, 02:32:45 AM: Tginking of buying this flatbed International truck. It has a 392. Is this an international motor, or is it an industrial Ford motor? Big block or small block? Any relevant comments or knowledge

Post by: RadSav on August 21, 2014, 05:11:16 AM: I did a quick Bing search and it looks like IH made their own long block 392 from 1962 to 1984. So it sounds like it is an International motor. But I'm no gear head.

Post by: b23 on August 21, 2014, 07:26:19 AM: My dad bought a new 3/4 ton IH pickup in 1973 and it had the 392 in it. He had it for almost 10 years and the only thing he ever had to replace on it was the alternator. There was a few different versions, depending on the year, of those 392's and if I recall, I believe there were some that had heating issues.

IH made many different gas powered V8's but the only ones they put in their pickups was the 304, 345 and 392. They made a little 266 V8 also but I've only seen those in older Scouts.

My dad's had the auto trans and it was a Chrysler TF727. They aren't the most fuel efficient motor but they're tough as hell and you can't hardly kill the dang things. They ride rough as hell when they're empty. My dad used to leave about 500lbs of tractor wheel weights in it to help smooth out the ride.

You still see a lot of IH, or Corn Binders as they are often called, around dry land farms. They are good ole trucks and will last forever.

That is for sure and usually people either love em, or they hate em!!! I suppose it depends on the individuals personal experience with them. Mine was a good one, so I've always had a soft spot for the old Corn Binders. I worked with a guy that had a early model half cab scout that had the 266 in it. Damn thing was cute as hell but I could never get him to part with it.
