Thinking about trying to get access pass for JBLM for my son and i in hopes of him getting his first deer, was curious if any one has had any luck out there and if it was worth a shot since capitol Forrest is full of road hunters

I have hunted JBLM off of Rainier Road. I know there are deer there because you can see the signs. Not had much luck there but that's probably my fault. My biggest frustration is that the range controllers can close off some great areas and leave you with areas that get a lot of traffic. Lots of good trails and a great outdoors experience just the same.

Also I think if you use the search tool and search JBLM or Ft Lewis and you should find some threads with more info.

I have hunted JBLM for years and only have harvested 1 deer :bash: but I know of others that have harvested many deer on base, but its not easy.
More like LUCK......... :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:
The number of deer are not high but there are some quality bucks. If I was looking to get my kid a first deer, JBLM would not be place. There are many other places with a more abundant number of deer.
I registered today and they raised the cost this year, $15 for DOD and $20 for CIV.
Witch ever you decide, good luck

Maybe a few deer.........................
But no Elk.. Not one.
It's Like Yelm :chuckle:

I shot the last big buck on JBLM last year. There is a lot of deer there they are hard to find. The biggest problem is they don't alow enough hunters to push or move the deer around. They will lay there and not move evin if you are 20' away if you don't see them. Every unit on the base has deer in it . It's just harder to find them with all the monovers they do out there. It takes years of hunting to figger the deer out there. Good luck.

thanks all for the feedback, still debating on it anybody got any suggestions don't want any honey holes just want to try to get my boy his first deer,im probably not the best mentor for him since this is my 2nd season hunting :dunno:

Pm me and I will give you a very simple easy honey hole. For the boy first deer. Not likely a big buck but horns and does for sure. And elk pass thru rarely.

Like others have said, that's a tough place to get a deer. It would be best if you had put in months of scouting and got a tree stand put up in a prime location. But to just go out there without any knowledge, you'll have a hard time even seeing a doe. But, you could get lucky. There are worse places. And this year there aren't many other options. I think what I would suggest is to get a St. Helens access permit for $150. That would give you tons of area to hunt with your son, and I think a much better experience than hunting Fort Lewis.
