Title: Tucannon River Steelies

There were three trucks parked at the small rest area about 400 yards up the Tucannon from the mouth. There were also three or four boats drifting bobbers just outside the confluence.

I actually saw more boats just upriver from the Lyon's Ferry bridge drifting out in front of the campground than I saw around the confluence.

Hope this helps ya out. I am headed back that way from Whidbey Island to Clarkston to see the wife and kids and may stop and see if I can make a quick catch. (Next week)

What do you think egg cluster at about 6-10 feet on a slide bobber or a marabou jig, possible corkies and eggs on a pencil led, to may decisions... :chuckle: I haven't fished stealhead for almost 10 years.

Post by: agchawk on December 09, 2008, 12:05:17 PM: Teach, we were out a couple weekends ago and used shrimp @ about 18-20 ft with a slide. Pulled three to the boat but only one was clipped. Also had a couple strikes but as usual, we were shootin' the bull instead of watching the bobbers and missed em.

If ya get out there keep me posted. I'll be home in Clarkston for Holiday leave starting on the 19th and plan on doing some fishing myself. It would be nice to hear what others are using and whether or not it's successful.

I was in Clarkston...we were fishing the Snake/Clearwater confluence. Of course, that doesn't help a whole lot since you were asking about the Tucannon/Lyon's Ferry area. Again...sorry about that. Didn't mean to lead ya to believe I was actually fishing Lyon's Ferry. The only thing I know about that area right now is what I saw when I drove through there.

My brother hits the steelies almost every day. Since my last trip was a few weeks ago I'll give him a call tonight and see what depth he's hittin' them at right now. I'll let ya know what I find out.

FYI: If you drive through Washtucna and past the Palouse Falls turn-off, keep your eyes open for the Muleys. I spotted a really nice 4X5 in there on that same trip. All in all I saw about 100 head, about 10 small bucks (Spikes and forkeys) and that one big one.

Post by: klickriverchromer on December 09, 2008, 06:54:30 PM: Hey there. first i'd try running my bait down from the slip bob about 8-10 /max. i'd use died coon shrimp. you can doit yourself or by them predied. don't care much for the big coon shrimp (pink) ones vac sealed at the stores.. prefer jared shrimp in bait brine solution already/ and purple/ not pink. double hook set is preferd, sometimes jigs add just the right presentation though. I like a jig when it's really wavy/rough, makes the jig (dance). If it's really calm, double hook it(MAKE SURE WHEN USING SHRIMP THAT YOU HOOK IT SOME THAT THE HEAD IS ANGLED DOWNWARD) thats how i've had my best success. i like purple shrimp and sometimes red. also i've died them blue and had success. options.

Post by: agchawk on December 09, 2008, 06:59:12 PM: Teach, I spoke to my brother a bit ago. He was hittin' them between 10-12 ft this past weekend. Klick sounds like he's doing pretty much the same thing.

Klick, that's the same type of shrimp we've been using (jarred shrimp, darkred/purple). Seems to work pretty good.

Post by: jackelope on December 09, 2008, 09:13:53 PM: i've heard there's a sweet spot at the mouth of the tucannon...if you're in it, you'll catch fish, if not you won't. there's usually a lineup of boats there fishing that'll catch fish. i've done it once and we could not get a spot in the right place so we didn't catch any fish.
the snake is a tough one to fish if you don't know it well. i know around asotin/clarkston you want to be fishing the old river channel...it's a little deeper and gets the fish out of the main current...i'd assume the same holds realtively true down around the tucannon.
