Is there a test?  Or do I just have to go to the class and then get my license?

Multiple choice test at the end of class, then you get a certificate showing you passed Trapper Ed. I 'hand deliver' the paperwork to WDFW on Monday morning and it takes about 1 week to get your info into their computer system. Then you can go down to Walmart or where ever you buy hunting/fishing license and get the license. Current price for a Trapping License is about forty bucks. Not too bad considering you can trap from Nov. 1 through March 31.

Would it be wise to get the book before the class?

Not necessary to read the book beforehand. We go over everything in class.

I have called George several times the last 3 years and still have not been able to take the class. He keeps saying call me back on such and such a date, I do, then no return phone call. Everyone will say hes busy this time of year, but guess what, I don't care, I really want to be able to trap and it seems like he is the only one to be able to set something up. So what can be done about it? Can someone else be in charge? How many guys do you want in a class? I bet I can get 10, is that enough for a class in Goldendale?

I don't think either is an instructor. Bob Maier is and in Walla Walla. Best to talk to George Brady. He can find the closest instructor for you and make some arrangements for you.

Ted is an instructor. I don't know about chuck but he has a more central location.

Is there an age limit for this class in the 22nd?

Is there an email address for George Brady.  Seems to me it might be easier to get ahold of him if he can read what we say instead of trying to hear a message.  I been trying but seems impossible.  I been wanting my trappers license very badly. I know a dozen others that do too. Why is there never a class on the east side? I don't consider Yakima area east side. A guy shouldn't need to travel half way across the state for this.  There seems to be a big enough demand over here to have a trappers ed class at least once a year in the Spokane area. Or at least a way to get ahold of someone to set up a private test.  WA trappers would have a little bigger voice if everyone who wanted to trap had a chance to do so.  There has to be a way to get this done. I don't mind driving an hour or 2 to get to the class but halfway across the state is not cheap! That's money that could be spent on traps or getting to and from your lines.

No, but they should be old enough to read. Reading is not a requirement but we have had students of an age too young to read and they have not matured enough to concentrate on the class for the day.
I would leave it up to a parent to decide and anyone is welcome but just be aware that your child will have to sit and be interested for several hours of class time.

There are more classes and instructors in E WA then on the west side most years. If you can contact George he can probably put you in contact with an instructor closer to you and arrange something.

I can understand everyone's frustration but remember these instructors take time out of their schedules, at their own expense and without any compensation to give classes. They do it because they took ownership in the sport and to further it along.

Also, don’t forget that you are not required to go through the traditional class. You can still obtain the study material on-line, schedule an appointment at a regional office and take the test. I did it years ago and it is still a valid process for obtaining the certification.

It is but Karen is about to have a coronary. The class is filled up to the brim and then some. If you want to attend we will try and accommodate you. Please have a little patience though. This is the last class of the year and we are trying not to turn anyone away. It might be a good idea to bring a folding chair if you have one.

OK, I dropped the paperwork off at WDFW this morning, Dan assured me they will process it asap. He also said that if you want to get your license now, all you have to do is present the orange card and they should be able to get you a trapping license based on the card. I am curious to see if it really works that way, so if anybody has success, let us know. I'd bet the cashier would have to call WDFW while you wait, but you never know.

It was great to see so many young people interested in trapping. The kids actually scored highest on the test! You should be proud of yourselves. Hope to see you in March at Elma for the Winter Rendezvous.
