Title: CCI Musket caps
Post by: predatorpro on August 28, 2014, 01:40:07 PM: am i the only one having problems with the cci musket caps not igniting pyrodex pellets? and yes i have cleaned my gun head to toe! nipple, breech barrel, firing pin...everything! the caps are going off but they dont sound like anything special...i just bought a the RWS musket caps to see how they do! i never had a problem while sighting my muzzy in...10 shots and only one mis fire (plugged nipple) when i was bear hunting the other day i pulled the trigger and just the cap fired...fire 4 more caps off and they all fired and powder would not ignite...but there was more humidity in the air that day too....

have ever had was because of a bad nipple.I use a redhot nipple on my Bighorn along with 3 pyrodex pellets for the last 15 years with no ignition problems. :twocents:

Every shot ive ever shot with this has felt like a centerfire rifle. I see no need for pellets. I use speed loaders with measured charges in them and they load just as quickly as pellets, and fire more reliably. :twocents:

Great, now my gun is going to mifire when I shoot at my deer this year. :chuckle:

i have heard great things about the old ones...these are a lighter charge....but i bought them cuz it was the only musket cap sportsmans warehouse had here and i needed to get my muzzy going, as far as i know these are the only muskets cci makes now

I used 100gr up until a week ago. I now use 110gr.

This is why I recently switched to #11 caps. I went to 3 stores and nobody had any musket caps other than the pic above. I didnt want those because I heard that they were very susceptible to moisure and hang fires, so I got the cci #11's. No issues yet. :tup:

Post by: predatorpro on August 28, 2014, 03:42:35 PM: im thinkin thats what my problem may have been with them(moisture)...when we sighted it in it was 95 outside, when i started having problems it was 50 out in the morning and their was a tons of moisture in the air, hopefully the rws ones i dont have a problem with...

An owner of a local muzzle loader shop told me to steer clear and switch to the German caps. He told me the new ones (re-enactment) were nowhere near as hot as the older stuff. I still have some of the older ones I use for plinking but I have been extremely happy with the German caps.

on the back i believe it says its for both so i thought perfect!....but i have the german rws caps now so hopefully that solves my problem, will be hittin the range to test em out! thanks everyone!

I noticed a few years back that Pyrodex pellets don't make it through a year of storage very well and after being in the cold weather in a container that isn't air tight they lose there bang and cost you bucks! :dunno: So if its last years powder toss it and buy new ones and ALWAYS put them in an air tight container. Not that black plastic box they come in. I don't even use them anymore because of the misfires. Same with CCI primer's. Lowgrade if you ask me and don't even fit well on your nipple... :tup:

yeh i just bought the pellets a month or so ago....so they are pretty new....i may just try the loose powder instead....i like the convenience of pellets but if i keep having problems ill have to switch...i agree with you on the cci musket caps! lol need to find what works best for me for my cow tag....i dont really feel like having misfires, i use to hunt with traditional muzzys, but just bought a new traditions vortek...shooting 250 grain hornady sst, great gun as far as accuracy and had no problems at the range (except for one misfire-nipple was plugged) until i took it out in the conditions...but i think being a sabot they let air (moisture) past too...so im hoping the hotter cap and a barrel condom will save me a lot of trouble

The path between the cap and the powder fouls and needs to be reamed out.
