Title: Horror story type of first day
Post by: jon.brown509 on September 01, 2014, 08:44:30 PM
We all have that one nightmare about things that would happen to us while hunting,my nightmare came true today. After I spotted the bachelor group this morning and low crawled about 300 yards to get into shooting range "close to about 40 yards" I reached in my pocket and my true fire thumb  release was gone... :'( I than had to watch this monster buck run away I've been sick to my stomach all day since

All the more reason I refuse to use thumb releases. Sucks your day was ruined because of it.

That sucks looks like there was a couple nice bucks in that bunch if you didn't blow them out of there they might stay in the area and give you another shot at them good luck

That's what I'm hoping they run from our friends place to a game refuge "Old farmers pets" no hunting on that's only 40 acres but it's rare for the bucks to leave it.I haven't seen this particular buck before but I hope to find him again

Nice buck Jon.  Sorry that happened.  Buy a wrist strap release for tomorrow yet?

Sorry to hear that.

Just incase you have not seen them or for the guys that are ruling thumb releases out because of no strap. They do make straps that fit most of the thumb release models now days. I have added them to several over the years that did not come with them. I have taken 20+ big game animals with a thumb release and don't think I will ever switch back. Most of the new models come with straps/cords now. I am running the hardcore 4 and it has a cord that I zip down around my wrist. It works great and is never in my way like a rigged release.

So you might check and see if they have one that will fit your release.

I've hunted a lot with the thumb, pinky and Scott Turd releases over the years.  Only one I ever lost was dropped down a porta potty...so not really lost, but I think you understand :chuckle:

Almost all that I have carried in the field had some sort of wrist strap.  Some full fledged buckle straps, some with the fantastic Tru-Ball strap, and some with nothing more than some surgical tubing.  All worked well, but the Tru-Ball V-Lock is my absolute favorite.  No gimmicky garbage, silent, easy to install and they come in buckle strap, Velcro strap and simple rope configurations.  I liked them so much I machined the same grooves into a Chocolate Addiction and a Target 4 when I switched to shooting Carter.

I later switched to a Quickie after a long conversation with Randy Ulmer.  But, I still carry the Tru-Ball and the Scott Turd as backup.  And since I've found about two dozen wrist strap releases in the woods over the years I figure a back up is a good idea...even with a wrist strap. ;)

Check them out!  http://www.truball.com/V-lock.html (http://www.truball.com/V-lock.html)

Back to OP,  Sorry to hear you didn't get a chance at that nice buck.  Perhaps it will be good fortune and you will get an even better buck.  Shooting one on opening day after waiting so long is sort of a bummer anyway, isn't it?  Good luck, hope to see the up close and bloody pictures soon

It'll make it that much more valuable when you take him later this week!  Good luck and sorry for your misfortune.
