Have a buddy that went to GPW for a loop hiking trip. He ran into crowds he said already set up for high buck. Not going to mention any areas but people that go there know the popular entry points. He stopped and talked with a lot of them. He said he must have rum across 50 camps already in for the opener. Some outfitter camps already up and a mix of other 1 and 2 person groups. He said as he was leaving even more were heading in. Some on foot and more with pack animals.
Looks like it's going to be crowded up there this year.....again

Could they possibly be bow hunters? Outfitters aren't supposed to pack in more than a day or two early, part of the regulations of their permits. There are also time limits for everyone for how long a camp can be in the same place. Seems incredibly early for high hunt camps. The season doesn't open for another week.

That's what I asked him. He said they had rifles at their camp and told him they were there scouting before the opener. I'm not aware of the regs on this but no not bow hunters. Not just hikers either. He stopped to talk to as many as he could and he said every one was there to hunt the high hunt when it opened. He was doing a 30 mile or so loop. He said it was ridiculous on how many were there and not just inside the wilderness boundary either. Some close but most back in quite a ways.

Maybe they were "bear" hunting before the opener

Could be. I hate hearing about the high numbers of hunters already out there. Just means it's going to be even more crowded. I would have figured more would be headed to ALW or some of the others. I've been out to GPW many times and never has it been that crowded as it sounds like this year

Pretty simple stuff... Don't talk about the High Hunt. duh...

Doesn't help there are so many closures this year. Good luck up there this year, I can't wait for the morning of September 15 th and to be sitting on a ridge line in the high county with rifle in hand, but I'll be in Wyoming. :).

Lots of closed areas with the fires so the outfitters will be taking their clientel elsewhere i.e. GPW.

2nd rule of high hunt. Dissuade high hunters, especially from your area.

Nope he's not a hunter just a hiker. Not that he doesn't like hunting. Just not his thing. He's been a good friend for over 15 years.
Personally I could care less. I don't hunt GPW. I love the Pasayten.

3rd Rule of High Hunt: Extol the virtues of places you want everyone else to hunt. :chuckle:
-
1st rule of the paranoid fanatic. Distrust everyone and everything. There always has to be an ulterior motive.

I wish I was already out there

You should go to Lucerne tomorrow or Monday and get a bus ride to Holden Village. Then take off to a trailhead up to where the big Mule deer live  Oh :bdid: you cant :sry:
