Title: BAT repeater
Post by: jjhunter on December 10, 2008, 05:54:58 PM
I picked this BAT repeater up a couple weeks ago.  I have always wanted to build the "perfect 'yote slayer" on one.  I know that it will wear a 12 twist Hart barrel in .24 caliber.....but, I am still on the fence as far as caliber.  Do I chamber it in .243 and shoot 70 grain BT's????  Or, do I go with the 6-284 and run 87 grain V-Max's????  Either way, I plan on seating the bullet out as far as possible while still being able to fit the magazine, using Lapua brass, and having my reamer built tight around the combo of my choosing.  Any thoughts?

Would you mind telling what you paid for it? They are very pricey, starting around $900.00

I paid $1075.  It has a .473 bolt face.   I would like to try something extreme since these BAT actions will handle hot loads with ease.   Has anyone seen Richard Franklin's .300 Varminter???  That would be a cool one to try.   I would have to swap the bolt, though.

jj, just cause the action will take the pressure does not mean your brass will. keep that in mind. it would suck to pop a primer and etch that bolt face >:(

Good point, HC.   I am sure that my 6-284 will be everything that I want it to be without running it too hard :chuckle:.   You shoot a RUM don't you?  I wouldn't expect that kind of advice from a UM shooter :) :)  Just kidding.  My out-of-state hunting buddys are UM shooters and they look down their noses at my .300 win.  We heckle each other in good fun.

I have heard that the fire pin holes are so tight in the BAT's that they are less likely to pop primers with hot loads???

I bought a .24 cal Hart barrel for this action today.  It is a 12 twist, Remington Varmint Contour, and fluted with the 8 flutes.  It will finish at 26" .  Should be here in 4 weeks.  Still on the fence as far a caliber?  243 or 6-284?  Hmmmmm.   I called H.S. precision today about inletting for this action.  It is a Remington short action clone (has same shape and screw spacing), but the bolt release is external on the back left of the action and it has an intregal recoil lug.  Not sure if the H.S. guys can fully inlet for this or not?  I might have to go with McMillan - you can send them your action and they will do a custom inlet for you.  I really like the feel of the H.S. stocks, so I am hoping they can do it.  I hope to be shooting this rig in a couple of months. :chuckle: :chuckle:

.243 Winchester or a .243 AI, I wouldn't even mess with 6-284. Nothing you shoot with a 243 AI is going to notice the difference between it and the 6-284. ;) The .243 Lapua brass is phenomenal if your going to run warmer loads the Norma brass looses primer pockets in a hurry with warm loads.

In college I built a couple 243's on remington actions and used lapua brass, 75 grain V-max, and a full charge of H4831sc.   It was a deadly combination for coyotes and chucks.  I don't really want a lot of case prep work and definitely want to use Lapua brass.  I probably should just go with the .243 again - it is definitely hard to beat.  Thanks for the input.
