Have I seriously misunderstood the rules?
Spike Bull Restrictions: Elk taken in these game
management units (GMUs) must have at least
one antler with no branches originating more
than four (4) inches above where the antler
attaches to the skull. An animal with a spike on
one side (1x2) is legal in spike only units. An
animal with more than one antler point more
than four inches above where the antler attaches
to the skull on both sides (2x2) is illegal.
Does this mean that I can shoot a 1x2 with eye guards? Something in years past I've always thought of as a 3x2?

Yes and I've passed on them too.

one time i passed on a 5x spike that was 3 feet long with two brow tines at 40 yards, I cant believe it. it was legal and I let it go, unbelievable.

They really need to adjust the images in the regs to account for this description. We all know what a regular spike looks like, as seen in the image below. How about one that shows a spike with small brown tines near the base and saying that this is legal as well?
UPDATED: Also attached is Oregon's image of a legal spike bull. Much clearer.

Yes it's legal, as long as the eyeguards don't originate more than 4 inches above the burr(which most young bulls don't). 3 points are even legal in true spike units. Is a screwy and bass ackwards reg, but it's the law. :dunno:

had a guy in camp a couple years ago that watched a bull for 20 minutes at 70 yards that was racked on one side and a spike on the other with an eye guard. he let him walk. heard through the grape vine that a 6x1 was killed the next morning in the same draw. he just wasn't sure & erred on the side of caution. when he heard the news and consulted the reg's again, the dude was physically ill, would have been his first. hard to tell some times, but you really have to know the reg's and pay attention to what you are looking at. I know I've let a few walk because I just cant measure an 1/8th of an inch through a scope at any yardage.
