Anyone hunting the state land? How's it looking and sounding?
-
Do you have a tag?

Do you have a tag?
Yes. Early rifle, Sept 22-26.

What a great tag to have! I'd buy the Weyerhaeuser permit for sure. Gives you a lot more area to hunt.

I was down scouting on saturday drove the 3000 at first light pretty quiet, dropped down the ridge onto the weyco side and not much over there either. It was about 88-90 degrees, never saw an elk, some sign around in the form of new rubs but its definitely a different place since I was drawn last time 5 years ago for a cow tag.

Thanks for the info. That would have been the opening day for archery hunters. Did you see a lot of rigs or hunters? I'm debating if I should buy the Weyerhaeuser permit...

I went down on Wednesday last week. I know the area very well. So I hit a place on the state side and bumped at 4X4 and two cows and the elk were very quiet. 70 yards shot was too long and it was my first day down there. I drove to another area that is only Weyerhaeuser property. They were on fire... I bugled a 5X5 in and arrowed it.
I harvested a 5X5 which is typical for that area. I shot it with 15 min of light left. While I was de-boning the bull in the dark there were other bulls around bugling. You should not have a problem knocking one down.

Anyone having hard time on a toutle bull.
-
A lifetime family friend more like my 2nd dad pulled an archery cow tag for the toutle. My dad(just helping) and him hunted the first few days getting on elk everyday. Just so as hunting goes, when you have a bull tag nothing but cows show up and when you have a cow tag you have bulls with in 15 yrds. They said the elk were vocal and responsive. They're heading back down tonight to hunt the last few days of the season. They also said they didn't see to many other hunters.
-
I agree I did not see very many hunters. I saw an other hunting group which had a 4X4 down. I think the entire group had bull tags. There were something like 5 hunters in the group.
Their camp was just off the 2700 road.

I'm heading down Saturday morning, my season opens on Monday. I didn't buy a Weyerhaeuser permit, so planning to hunt state land around signal peak. I will probably shoot the first branch bull I see, depending on circumstances.

That's my camp. What rig were you in?

Make that 2 bulls out of 5 tags. I was able to shoot a nice thick horned 4 point on the last day of the season.
-
I turned around in your camp. I was driving the 2012 gray F150. Crew cab and a black tonneau cover.
I talked to a person in your camp who shot that bull. And someone moved a white truck so that I did not have to make a 15 point turn around.
I shot my bull that evening.

My Toutle early rifle bull, taken 9/25/14. I'd like to thank the handful of guys on here who shared their thoughts on Toutle elk hunting. It was a good hunt.

Hey guys, what's the best map that shows the state land? I have a muzzy cow tag and can't afford the permit.
-
DNR map, sold at the castle rock dnr office. It's the St Helens tree farm map if I remember correctly. I have one in La Center if you can't make it to the dnr office during hours.

The GoHunt application on the WDFW website is very helpful also.
