Title: Whitman County Buck
Post by: thepredator on September 10, 2014, 12:02:43 AM
Was able to get this little fella on Friday evening, but I've been unable to post due to work.
I've been harvesting the last month or so and working the usual 14 hour days. But spending so much time in the barley, wheat and bean fields definitely has it's advantages  :)
I finished up my cutting around 730pm and sped out to the spot I've been keeping tabs on a few decent bucks. A few hundred yards from the truck I spotted this guy and his big brother on a small rise around 500 yards out. I noted their direction and took off running as light was fading fast. After a half mile I was sweating, out of breath and hopefully behind the hill I expected them to come over and knelt down to catch my breath. I was breathing hard enough to muffle the sounds of the two bucks footsteps as they came over the hill right at me. I saw antlers and drew back. As they came over about 15 yards from me I held at full draw for a solid minute until it was safe to shoot. I let it fly and the Montec found its mark. He was startled and took a few steps, wobbled and fell not 30 yards from me. He was dead before he hit the ground and I laid down in fear of passing out with excitement. Getting him into my truck by myself was probably hilarious if anyone would have been watching.
As I was dressing him out the arrow hit a rib, but went through both lungs.
Largest deer for me so far and first muley. I am one happy camper!

That 'little fella' as you called him is one stud buck. Anyone would call him a trophy no matter how many deer they've put down. Nice story and great deer.

Very nice.....Cool story.
I can relate to loading one whole solo into a truck bed. Doesn't seem like it should be too hard but dang

Thanks guys, it's a great feeling to finally get a deer worth bragging about. It was technically a public land buck, but I stalked him from private land. The farm/ranch I work has over 5000 acres. My boss usually allows a few people for rifle and muzzleloader but I am the first to hunt with a bow on his land, well legally anyways. He would let more people but I have to run down and chase at least 2 people a day off his land. Most shoot animals and cut off the rack or get spooked and drive off leaving wounded deer, elk, etc. I am constantly surprised at people and their complete lack of respect for people's property but more importantly the animals and their right to a clean humane death.Sorry to rant but I just had to burry 2 deer by tractor after finding the rotting antler less carcasses bringing in the coyotes and spooking the cattle. Someone shot them and took a hack saw to the racks and left them to rot.
